i have what seems to be an odd made garage door... i havent seen another garage door like this one.. its probably around 30yrs old..

i bought some foil backed board insulation and used insulation glue and stuck it to the door, it has helped alot, but i would like to add to it, but dont really know how.. was thinking maybe another layer of the same type of insulation and spacing it out the thickness of the insulation for an air pocket, then maybe using aluminum flashing and screwing that to the hurricane braces...

you guys have any ideas?

I used the same thing but 2 layers to get me 1-1/2" thickness and then covered in heavy duty aluminum foil to repel sparks from grinding and such. Been on for 10 years with no problems and definitely makes a huge difference.

I agree with "sfm1951", and would go with foam board, if you feel you need more insulation. It is light weight, and has good insulation properties. When I bought my home, the previous owner insulated the door with fiberglass bats, and then used hard board screwed into the frames to hold it in place. It makes the door way too heavy, and the screws are always working themselves loose, alowing the panels to either drop, or bind. I think you did the right thing with the foil backed bubble insulation, reguardless.

I wish my door was that easy, my door is designed completely different than your style of door.

How So? Doesen't your door have 6 or so hinged panels that will allow for 1" thick foam board?

Wayne

No, If you look at the pictures in the first post I dont have the flanges you have and the hurricane/wind brace runs the full length of the door about an inch and a half below the hinges..
the hinges are built in the panel, the hinge is formed/bent from the panel, not separate hinges riveted or bolted on like yours.

I think I'm just going to wait until spring and order a spray foam kit

Brucer mine has the hurricane braces also. I removed them on each panel and installed the 2 layers of 3/4" foil backed foam board and then secured the hurricane braces back on. Yours are different than mine but they should bolt on all the way across I would think. I can't really tell in your pics. My door is fit with 2x4 bracing thus providing the 1-1/2" between the skin and the hurricane braces.

Are you supposed to leave an air gap? I have room for 3/4" foam board in mine, and was just going to put that in and the foil flashing to protect it.
