I bought this fan this past weekend and was wondering if anyone could give me some more info on it. Theirs not that much infor on this particular fan. Here are some numbers I found on the fan. 78X236, form AU2. It is GE made. From what I have found it looks like it was a 1939 model not sure if that is correct. the cord that goes to the motor is not connected not sure if I did that when I was loading it or not. All in all it looks to be in good shape.

I also was able to get this Columbian vise, not sure when or what model it is only thing I found is that is says No. 5

Thx for the replies.

That is a very good heavy duty fan. I bought one with a standard table base as a freshman in college for 12.00 in 1961. I used it there and later 30+ years at work. One of my coworkers knocked it off and bent the blade and guard. I worked to straighten and ballence the blade but could never get it quite right, it shakes some. It is still in my garage and works. Clean it up, rewire, ect. Those fans will move some air.

HFDFF......those fans usually need rewired with a newer power cord, and you MAY want to put a new switch in it. Otherwise they are pretty much a *************, so for your safety, I will gladly take it off of your hand and not even charge you, and I'll even pay for the shipping.:lol: After al, that's what friends are for

Seriously......nice find, but I would switch out the power cord, and possibly swap out the switch. That seems to be the only thing that will go wrong with them, especially after all of those year. Then give it a good cleaning up, add a little shine to it, and it will run for another 75 years. After all, they were built to last. My mom had an oscillating GE floor or desk fan that she had ever since I was little, and it was her mom's and probably bought ne and about the same age as yours. One of my sisters snagged it up when I was taking care of my parents at the hospital and at a nursing home, when my back was turned.

The cord is dry rotted. I would like to keep it as original as possible. I found a website that sells cords that are new that look like the originals. Hopefully I will get to work on it here soon. I guess when I get the chance I'll put a newer cord and see if it will work, then get one of the newer orginal cords.

When I bought it I asked if they new if it worked they said they weren't sure but I could plug it in and try it. I told them that it was okay dont think I want to try it with cord looking as it did and the ground being wet from a good rain from the other day.:shocking:

$60 for the fan, not sure if I paid to much but they orginally wanted 75. From what I saw most people were selling the desk top versions for a 100+ not sure if that was working or not. The vise I got for $40 they wanted 65 I was willing to pay that. I told him that I would think about it on our way out he told he would sell it to me for $40.
