Need some insight on a Wilton vise....

Hey there just picked up this vise today for a large some of $0 ... the guy didnt like it said it was too heavy so snaged it up..

From a few quick serches found out its a Wilton 1765 6.5" vise and from what i gatthered not a cheap one at that. But upon cleaning found a few spots that i didnt care for. It will be used for gun smith-ing and such so not heavy use at all.. I know its a little over kill but for the price it will work..

So take a gander and tell me if this is just a VERY heavy paper weight or a good vise that will last me a while...

Where that brake is at makes it pretty much a paper weight. That break is caused by opening the vise to far and dropping a heavy object in the jaws

Well that really *****... is there any way to repair it? Or have it repaired?

You could repair it by brazing it up and press fitting a ring to go around that area at least that's how a another member repaired his wilton and his was split in half!

Fine for your use. Not a problem until upper limits you'll never see.

Nothing's beyond repair. It just depends on how much you can do or how much you want to pay someone to do what you can't.

The spindle fits a lot of machinist's vises, 400N/S, 450N/S 9400, 9450, as well as the base and swivel handles, pipe jaws etc. Part it out, don't take a chance.

Theres people that will buy just parts of a vise? Im getting mixed response what is the worst that would happen if I used it and that bottom piece broke off?

People do buy used parts off vises to fix ones that are also broken but have good castings. The problem with your break is if you put something heavy in it the whole jaw and the part being claimed could fall out and seriously hurt you or damage things around you.

Okay if thats all it is then im a little less worried about it, this is pretty much a hobby vise.. if I feel I need more from my vise then it can handle. . I'll look into replacing it and just send off to you ducksface...

Let Ducksface have it. Get a smaller, lighter vise for gunsmithing, unless you will be working on Howitzers. Because it is such a heavy vise, it is not as "sensitive," and could really do some damage to your shotgun barrels, or whatever delicate parts you are working on. The last thing you want is to crush something because the big *** screw handle turns an extra 20 degrees because it is so heavy.

if you weld that up with some mig wire called CROWN ALLOY 44-30 have someone do it that knows how to weld good i thing you might be supprised that wires the ticket for welding cast steel
