Need some opinions.

22x29 attached garage used as a hobby DIY work area. I have 750 sq. Ft. Of Epoxy-Coat color coat/clear coat material. Floor has been Diamond ground to perfection and all blames/cracks etc. repaired with Epoxy paste. Weather has been too wet here on Long Island but Saturday looks good if not great. I have two bays and a work area. One bay has a lift in it. Original plan was to cover the whole floor with Epoxy. One coat of base with flakes and second coat of clear. A friend just gave me enough industrial grade, 5/8" thick interlocking black rubber mat to cover the entire area under the lift. I 'm thinking of using them under the lift and increasing the amount of Epoxy-Coat on the remaining floor area. The thickness will really increase if I do it this way. Please offer some comments. thanks ! Al W.

I would choose concrete over rubber when oil and grease is expected.

I'd epoxy the whole floor also.

There may come a time when the mat is torn and old, or you find it doesn't perform to your expectations, or it runs away to join the circus. Whatever the reason someday the mat may not be there for you.

That day you'll either be glad that you coated the entire floor, or feel really, really bad that you didn't. Guaranty yourself a happy day.

Thanks Fred! My real dilemma is that I wash my own cars so in the
Winter it's done in the garage. I'm concerned about water being trapped under the Mats.

That's a good concern, and even more reason to coat the entire floor. If you do wash a car, and runoff gets under the mat, it's going to be a whole lot easier and pleasant to mop up and dry that area if it's coated. In a few minutes the entire floor can be clean and dry, if bare concrete gets wet in the winter, it can stay wet for a long time.

If you have deicing salts or chemicals they can leave stains on bare concrete, and even break it down over time, a good coating system will be impervious to that run off.

No doubt they shipped you enough material to coat your entire floor. Any benefit you may see from having a slightly higher coating build in some areas will not offset the potential pain you'll experience from leaving the mat area uncoated.
