Hey I am looking for some pegboard ideas. well I would also Like to see photos of your pegboards in your shop.

I have a 30 X40 shop the roll up doors are at both ends and off set. It is like a drive threw. I was thinking about putting up pegboard on that wall. I was thinking rakes shovels yard tools so they are up off the floor and neat and tighty

I did a search on this thread on pegboard and there were a few threads and a few photos, but there is not as much talk about it as I thought.

Lots of pegboard here, before and after photos

I thought all pegboard would've been too much of a monolithic look so I decided to break it up for a more finished appearance.

I can't help but think that pegboard isn't ideal for rakes/shovels/yard tools.

So many other alternatives that are geared directly towards that use.

@regguy1 Great photos I like the look! Thanks

@CPS I was looking at the Metal pegbord I think it holds like 1000 lb per sheet (dont quote me on that) What were you thinking?

I'm thinking racks and hooks specificially designed for shovels/rakes/yard tools.

I also like slatwall 100x more than pegboard.

I've got metal pegboard on my website. It would be pretty expensive to do on such a large scale. The panels are 16" by 32", meant to line up with studded walls. They do make larger panels on special order, I could check it out for you. Another choice might be slat wall panel. The material on my site is PVC which would be nice for you, cause you can hose it down. It's still meant to be screwed into 16" on center studded walls and at about $5 per square foot isn't real cheap either.
Check it out and let me know what you think.

I don't know... seemed to work good for me. Of course I used the metal type with specific attachments for the rakes/shovels/yard tools :)

I prefer the old-time look of pegboard for a garage but I know everyone doesn't think garages are synonamous with old cars and trucks. My issue with slatwall is the cost and the fact that unless you buy the kind that has the metal liner strips that fit in the slats (more $$), if you overload it you can break a chunk out of the slat. That not only looks like **** but can't be fixed easily, if at all. Pegboard gives more organizational options. Just my $.02

Regguy, I've seen your garage many times being here but I am always struck with how nice it looks. Orderly without being entirely ****. Bravo!

Unless you want to build a wall inside of your girts with 2x4's I would also consider something else. You could probably find some retention type racks that you could mount directly to your girts, but considering how close they are to ground level it might not acutally get your yard tools up off of the floor. Something else to consider would be Husky Track Wall that could be directly attached to your girts and use a variety of hangers. Once again, though--your girts are pretty close to the ground.

IMO, i hate peg board and those part bins. I guess it all depends what you do inside your garage but those items just collect dust like no other and i regret using them.. just something to think about if youre a clean freak (and im not but it still irritates me)

I did what you're talking about on a much smaller scale. I combined the pegboard with a stamped metal rack at the top for the heavier stuff.

You might have to use 2x4s screwed to the girts to frame it, but mine works.

Gladiator track and gear wall are what I use. I really scope out deals because it is so expensive. This weekend I scored on gear wall.

I just bought some Gladiator gear wall from sears. Its usually $100 for 2 8 foot panels, but I was able to get them on clearance for $25.93

A 4 foot piece of Gladiator track is $10. Sometimes there are BOGO sales.

I bought $700 worth of gearwall for $170 using my sears rewards points too. You have to get lucky to get it at this price. Reviews of this product is usually 5 stars on Amazon.com, but people complain about the price...

Here are some pics of my tracks and gearwall.

If youre looking to just hang rakes and brooms, all you need is some tracks and hooks. Rubbermaid also makes a real nice product.

I think pegboard offers versatility that other wall systems don't. However, the disadvantages of pegboard are that it isn't as strong as some other wall storage systems and the hooks tend to move and come out when you remove tools. But, there are solutions to these shortcomings. The moving hook problem is easily solved by buying pegboard accessory kits that include the plastic clips that lock your hooks into place. I use them and they work great. The solution to the strength issue is to use pegboard in conjunction with other wall systems. Sears Versatrack is great to use with pegboard (has slots that you slide your pegboard into) and now Home Depot sells the same product under the Husky brand name so you have 2 sources for it. While filling a whole wall with it can be expensive (each piece is $10, $8 on sale), it is cheaper than the gladiator panels and you can cut costs further by using it with pegboard. This way you can use the versatrack to hang heavier things and the pegboard for other stuff. Another advantage is that you can customize it to fit your space and your taste. I also bought a rubbermaid kit when it was on sale for my yard tools. Here is my current set-up:

I agree with many on here that pegboard is awesome for what it is, which is ease of access. That being said you can dress up your pegboard as most comes in more than just pressed wood brown. HD sells it with a white vinyl backing, and I painted mine to match my workbench and cabinets. I bought three pegboard organizer kits from HF for dirt cheap with coupon, sure out of the 50 pieces some aren't spaced correctly and are junk, but for the cost, you can get alot of organization. I also didn't do a huge pegboard, so I used alot of the deeper hooks and have stacked alot of common tools, this is still easier and faster than opening drawers...

I did slatwall in my attached, and it's great. Wire baskets, hooks, etc. It's plenty stong without the metal strips too. I have a substantial shelf with strong brackets that have "outriggers" to take weight. (The Viper's soft top and windows are on it)

I had the garage door catch on one of the hooks while coming down and it bent the heck out of the hook...but did not damage the slatwall. I took the hook to the vise to straighten it...and I dragged the workbench out of place and hook didn't bend.

I did use white pegboard upstairs for the knee walls of the garage with some areas being removable to get behind for storage. The perforations help with ventalition too. I only keep lighter things on these boards..but they're very helpful.

I put a bunch of things I use regularly up on my pegboard. It's been awesome so far - tool cleanup is super quick, and having all my regular use tools within arms reach while at my workbench is ideal IMO.

As for rakes and shovels and such, I prefer plywood walls and tool specific anchors. I also used some screws here for the odd stuff:

I use pegboard in some places. I agree with the people who have said it's not good for some things. I make up pegboard panels so that I can mount them where I need them. That way if I have the need to change things up somewhat I can take the whole panel down & move to wherever I want. I have used this method with pegboard for years, with a whole bunch of different sized & shaped panels.
Also by making panels like this every hole in the pegboard is usable. Before I started doing it this way I would always seem to need to use the hole that had a board covering it up from behind.

Here are some pics of a panel I made for my sister-in-laws garage.

Thanks Dan,

One thing that helped was an addition my son and I built on to the garage in 2002 (12' x 20') that allowed me to put up shelves and park the tractor and keep all the odds and ends out of sight and keep the main area neater. The garage actually looks better with the addition.

Since I was snapping pics yesterday in the garage, I clicked one of the pegboard. This would be something newer as it sits now as compared to my other post.

Inthe middle you can see the srewdriver rack that I built one day. On the right, would be another one day project, a paper towel holder/shelf. An adjustable book shelf to the right of that.

great stuff. My first thought was 4X8 medal Sheets stood up then screwed to the girders then some finish trim. two problems the sheets that size are expensive and the shipping cost. there does not seem to be a lot of suppliers of it. I was trying to do it cheep.

The press borad type would not be strong enough the way I was thinking of doing it. There would have to be framing involved

The proper use of pegboard should be used. I have several areas that I use pegboard.

My workbench has pegboard that is in the shape of a off road trail for my shop made Jeep art coming over the hill.

I've got a few others. A small one used for circ saw blades. One side of my large cabinet is used for lots of long items.

I'm a fan of pegboard. I took an unfinished garage which had exposed 2x4 studs and finished the garage with masonite pegboard. The garage is unheated and I used the pegboard instead of sheet rock, plywood or OSB. The peg board is gives it a finished look. I didn't paint the pegboard (yet) but this is an option.

I bought the pegboard on sale at Lowe's.

If I had to hang heavy garden tools I used Gladiator tool hangers over the pegboard. The weight would be on the tool hangers but the exposed studs would be closed in.

I have wall cabients, free standing cabinets, pegboard and it just sort of all goes together.

Over my work bench I have my tools that I use fairly often but most of my tools live in a rolling tool cabinet.

I lucked out. My company did a photo shoot for a company (Bench Solution) that manufactures high quality slatwall and a fold-down, wall mounted workbench. Luckily, they used my garage for the shoot. My payment...a wall full of slatwall! I'm not sure what the actual cost would be to do this, but I will say it has saved a ton of space!

I went crazy with slat wall. For $40 a sheet and no mudding and taping to do, I love the stuff.
