I'm going to throw this out there as I would like to have 16 pieces of steel cut. These are part of a bracket I'm making. Is there anyone here that can do this without it costing an arm and a leg?

I created a diagram of the cut pattern with dimensions. I don't have a CAD tool unfortunately but this should be really easy to replicate.

It's not necessary to adjust the cuts to accommodate the kerf. I've already accounted for that. As long as the kerf is roughly centered on the cut lines, it'll be fine.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I said plasma or laser. I guess water jet would be fine too.

I can cut them for you. They would all fit in the flat rate box. Do you need all of the pieces, ie the circles too (not that it matters)? Or just the horseshoes?

Well, it would depend on if that line bisecting the circles is a measurement or a cut line. Not exactly a horseshoe, but FYI, any line inside of a drawing, unless drawn as a measurement like this <--------> is considered a cut line, at least for plate cutting (water, laser, plasma).

So, unless otherwise specified, I would cut those out as half diamonds, with a half circle. Also why common line cutting typically isn't used. That way there's no confusion and the parts can be probably nested tighter if the circles are scrap. Not that it matters that much on a piece that size. Best thing would be to post the drawing of one part and the number you need, even if it's just a paper drawing with written dimensions. I can draw in CAD in less than a minute.

Not arguing with you. The intent was to point out to the OP that his drawing leaves something open to interpretation. If those are cut lines then the OP is going to get two different parts from that. Is that what he wants?

no neat sig line

He said in his original post he wanted 16 pcs. so I would say that all solid lines are cut lines.

Kaz, thanks. I'll PM you.

Yes. All the lines are cut lines. The circles are waste. Below is the final shape I need to retain. BUT, in making this diagram, I realized I made a critical mistake on the larger diagram. Each piece should be a mirror image of the previous one. So in order for this to work out, the circles need to be centered horizontally. Glad I caught it now!

Thanks for the offer. I PM'd Kaz but he's on the left coast and it's still early there. If I don't hear from him by tonight I'll take you up on it. Is that enough notice?

And thanks for the PDF!

If you can have FN handle it, is go that route on the laser. I just wanted to make sure you got taken care of, but I actually need to drop my plasma off for service this morning so trying to get that done asap.

Have you checked local to you for a steel supplier that could do this for you? I'd call around first so you can save on shipping. Also, you only have to supply the desired part dimensions and the number you want. They will do the nesting layout based on their machine and any other parts they might do including yours. They usually have software that makes this an easy task.

I've been down that road. The local guy seems to be so busy that he can charge out the wazoo for small stuff and he doesn't really like to do it. I've quit asking.

Parts have arrived and they're absolutely perfect! I still can't get over the fact that I transmitted some pixies over the interweb and, a few days later, the manifestation of my idea arrives in a box, via UPS.

With schwag!

Many thanks to 4 FN 27!

Even though they match my dimensions perfectly, they're smaller than I pictured in my head.

Regardless, they are a perfect fit! I measured twice. Actually about eight times.

I'll post the final results.

After I completely ruin these with my amateur welding.

Nice! Kazlx has done similar work for me on his CNC plasma table. I sent him my low-tech CAD aka Cardboard-Aided-Design templates, he put them into CAD and gave me steel pieces precision cut out of 3/16" steel. Pretty cool stuff.

@4FN27 is that your business or you work for a laser cutting/machining company? I ask because I saw in the other thread you just bought a plasma (CNC?) table for the home shop?

No problem...glad to help if I can...and if I have the time...

I owe somebody on here a Stainless Bench Top and I cannot remember where I put the info on what to build and where to ship it...I will come across it and they will get a surprise one day...LOL...

Been in the Sheet Metal Fab game for 37 years now. First 17 years as an employee starting in Shipping packing boxes at 16 years old, Machine Operator through college, Inspection 2 years, Engineer for 5 years, Sales Engineer until 1997 when we started our own shop. Celebrating 20 years this year...6 Lasers, 7 Turret Presses, 26 Press brakes and 92 great employees...I still design, program, sell, weld, Laser...I do it all except Purchasing and washing windows...even shovel the sidewalk on occasion...

My goal at home is to be able to do everything we can do here...not sure if I can adjust to a Plasma Cut vs a Laser Cut. time will tell...just met with the IT department to set up my home work station...Solidworks, MasterCam...I have 35 years worth of personal designs I need to get in one location and sorted.

Retirement will be fun...If I can ever give up the day job...too much fun right now!!!

Awesome stuff there! we should all be so lucky to have a 'job' that we enjoy. Funny I'm in IT, various roles and responsibilities (just about anything you can think of). As a kid I was hacking away at the Ataris and Commodore so used to love it but after 20+yrs of it since college I'd much rather build things by hand, slow it down. Retirement is hopefully on the horizon in about 10-12yrs years and the goal is to move to a lower cost of living area and build a large hobby shop. May even earn a few dollars from it to feed the hobby but that'll just be icing on the cake, less from a money aspect but more from a 'I'm good enough that people will pay me for this' perspective.

I'm glad to hear that you love what you do. You're a lucky guy in that respect. And you're keeping other people employed to boot!

Better late than never.

I finally got this thing done. Thanks again 4 FN 27 for getting these brackets cut. Here's the finished product. There will be weights on each side but I wanted to show how I used the brackets.

You're welcome Jim!!! Very nice!!!

I am more of a fan of 12 ounce curls myself...just say'in...
Yeah, me too. Only for me it's curling Quarter Pounders and fries.

This was my birthday gift to my wife. Her office is also her workout space and this was a means of organizing her leg weights and dumbbells.
