I was hoping to hear about a knipex sale or find a good buy onm them but that has not happened. Looking for the push button style.

Are the sears Craftsman made by Knipex? If so are they the push button kind. Getting ready to pull the trigger and I want to get a step up from what I had and a step or 2 down (price wise) from Snap on.

What type of pliers are you looking for?

I have been happy with my USA made craftsman pliers. Have a few years on them now.

I've got some Knipex, but the Irwin isn't bad at all, its a button with a sliding ratchet to close.

I like the sliding push button idea. My local sears is out of stock but one not two far away has 2 pairs. Think I will pick one up.

Thanks all.

yep, they're the Craftsman versions made by Knipex...much cheaper and easier to warranty.

Those sliding button pliers are the way to go, when I get the money I am going to snag a full set and put all my traditional adjustable pliers on backup/welding duty.

SO I picked up the craftsman push button pliers about an hour ago. Got the last set on the shelf. I wanted a pair for work and the sales gut was trying to sell me a set of Irwin's instead. THey are also push button and 24.00 instead of the 35.00 for the craftsman. He said they are made by the same company. I asked what company, he said he could not say. Is this true?

The Craftsman are nice. Played with them a bit since I got back to work. These were covered in a good bit of oil. I have had tools coated with a light coating but this is pooling in every indent. Look like they were dunked. Is this normal?

Please weigh in if I soujld travel to a Sears 30 min away or just pick up the Irwins if they are the same.

Thanks for the guideance all.

That sales associate is a major idiot. Irwin does not make those pliers for Craftsman; they're made by Knipex. You made the right choice.

I think he was insinuating that Knipex makes them for Irwin also and that they were cheaper.

They're cheaper because they're made in China. Knipex doesn't make anything in China. They're not Knipex Cobra's and they never will be.

The oil is normal.

Just wipe them down and get to using them. :)

My local Sears for some reason had a bunch of the 7" C'man Knipex made Cobra's with the black handles on clearance (in the secrect clearance aisle) back in January marked down to $10 a pair. I bought 4 and sent 2 up to jeffmoss26 and those had oil on them.

Oddly enough they had several pairs in the normal aisle for regular price. Go figgure.

As for the blue/yellow handled Irwin push button "Cobra" styles, they have their place but they are NOT on par with the higher priced German made real Cobras. On sale that two piece set of Irwins can be had for $14.99 for the pair, and that should tell you everything.

I love my Cobras but YMMV of course.

Correct - The Craftsman's are 100% made by Knipex, and if you look at the set you bought, you will notice they say "Made in Germany". The Irwins, not made in Germany!

Yup, Craftsman has rebadged the Knipex 7" and 10" Cobra pliers. Can usually be found cheaper than the Knipex in store and to my knowledge, since they're badged as Craftsman would fall under their lifetime warranty. They've been doing this for several years now to my knowledge.

What do Knipex pliers do that Channelocks won't?

Different tools.

knipex has jaws set up to a different design to engage a fastener more fully while std. tongue and groove pliers use a pseudo parallel style jaw meant for flat mat'l or just to engage two faces of a 6 sided nut/bolt/fastener.

Both have thier place but they are far from the same tool.

Just think ball peen vs claw hammer. Both hammer things but you cannot remove nails with a ball peen. LOLZ.
They are both hammers, but not the same hammer.

:)

This is an old thread but I swung by Sears tonight and looked at the Craftsman branded Knipex Cobra pliers. They are absolute junk! They are no where near the quality of my real Knipex Cobras. The jaws wiggle all over the place and they had a general cheap feel to them. The grips were cheesy too. It was obvious that they were manufactured to a different level of quality for Sears. The good news is, they had some Alligators hanging up and they were the same outstanding quality that Knipex makes all their pliers to.

I have knipex and I have the Craftsman version, mine are the same, but they are both a couple years old.

I prefer the Irwin button adjust as it "ratchets" closed without the need to hold down the button, which is only held down to release and open the jaws. My favorites are the smallest Irwins, maybe 7", very handy.

I don't care what brand it is, I always check the jaws etc for a good tight fit and only buy a good set. Assuming others do as well its easy to see how a bad set might end up the only one left on a rack.

As for the Cobra's you need to use a pair for a few days to see just how nice and how useful they are compared to many other types of pliers.

I actually like the Sears re-branded version better because the grips have a little more cushion.
The Craftsman 2 piece set is cheaper and is often discounted at least some but with Lowe's price drops lately on the Knipex it's inevitable to own both.
