What is a good brand for some 3/8 drive SAE deep well sockets? I have some craftsman normal depth and need some deep well sockets. Is craftsman the best for the price or are there other brands to consider? thanks

craftsman will be fine for you and they are a good value. then spend your money on a nice ratchet like a SK or snap on.

Sounds like a plan, I have my eye on Snap on T72 for my 1/4 stuff on eBay. I already have a nice SK 3/8 ratchet, wouldn't mind a Snap on if a deal came along though.

If you're unhappy with Craftsman, Proto or Wright would be a step up for a tad more money. Gearwrench or Toptul are at least equivalent to Craftsman, in quality and price. If you're happy with Craftsman, stick with it.

I love my snap on deep sockets I'd highly highly recommend them. They are expensive but the best.

bmxr4life87, Write more about your GEARWRENCH reg and deep sockets.....

Do they make them in 6pt. With 60,80 and 88 tooth rachets, I'm thinking 6 pt sockets are what I want.

Anybody reading have 1st hand experience with TOPTUL, GEARWRENCH, or maybe GENIUS sockets ??? .....all good TAIWANESE brands ???

GearWrench sockets are an excellent choice for someone who's never owned Snap-on sockets and extensions. What you don't notice will not affect you. :D

What about buying used?? Can get some good deals on used Snap-on. Also, if you go Craftsman I would recommend the older used Craftsman sockets and ratchets, they are stronger than the new stuff. Look for the date codes on the older Craftsman to be: -v- , =v= or vv. Good luck!

I picked up Craftsman deepwell 6 point sockets for cheap during Craftsman club days - the socket sets go for as low as 1/2 price.

I would also look for whatever is closest to you for warranty service. Your SK which has a limited lifetime won't be as good if you have to mail it vs. driving to a store. Mailing will take weeks and your stuck w/ a broken vehicle.

There's an auto parts store a few miles away that warranties SK tools last time I checked. What's the best place to get Gearwrench sockets?

Really there are sooo many sockets on the market its hard to really call one better than the other. There are certainly some very nice "mid level" brands available before you hit tool truck pricing. I would steer towards SK simply because of my experience with their products and warranty in the past. Haven't played with GW sockets but I like the ratcheting wrenches I own and they've held up well for me. If you are just weekend wrenching go with whats available in your price range and what you can get warrantied easiest (per another post above).

My advice is to buy the best you can afford. But also consider warranty ease.
Any make socket can break as i found out today when my 12mm snap on went crack. (cue spanner rash and much swearing) And no it wasn't on an impact.

Personaly I am going to recomend craftsman because I love my c man stuff I have never had a problem with my deepwell sockets. the only thing you have to watch out for is craftsman doesent always offer 12pt or 6pt in the size that you may be looking for Ie big sizes and really small sizes. I have a 1-1/2 inch socket and its 12pt. and most of the bolts that big are 6pt. also there swivel sockets are 6pt. wich is great for cars but on turbines not so much :( so look around Personaly I like mine and they have never let me down. but im not going to say they are the best. and craftsman chrome isnt nearly as nice looking as some of the more expensive guys but still they are decent tools for the moeny

HOPE THIS HELPS

I'd concur - if one cannot afford to buy it all at once, buy the best ratchet and it will make any name brand socket feel OK. Conversely, once one has become sensitive to good ratchets, put a Snap-on socket on a Craftsman ratchet and the value of the sockets seems to go away.

thnx, jack vines

buy a set of craftsman sockets
They have never let me down other than when used on an impact (14 mm cracked) and for the price you cant beat them, especially the more you buy the cheaper they are. Gearwrench is another good choice but CMan is easier to warranty.

Another recommendation for Proto and Wright sockets. Both socket brands are of exceedingly high quality and are certainly on par with Snap On.

I would personally avoid new SK sockets. I returned the last set I bought due to very poor quality control.
