Pretty easy to come up with the base. My only regret with my stools is that one of the two has a rotating cushion on top. I guess this makes it easier to turn while you're sitting, but it makes it downright dangerous when you're using it to stand up on. I much prefer the one with the fixed seat.

I bought a couple of stools a while back for the garage. They were actually bar stools from someone's house. I think I paid $10.00 each for them at the garage sale. Nice to sit in and take a break from the work.

im thinkin of using the 1/4 back rubber seats you can get online for like 15 bucks and welding them to a post through a steel wheel

I like the post through the steel wheel design. I made one like that but also built a frame that sits inside the steel wheel & attached casters to it so it's mobile. The wheel itself sits aboout 1/4" off the floor so it looks like the wheel is sitting on the floor at 1st glance.

is the steel wheel generally heavy enough to keep you from tipping over? only huge casters work for me because i have a wooden floort ahst 150 years old and not even close to flat or level. cool idea tho

I make stools fairly often ( pun intended ), I use a tractor seat, a car axel cut to the desired height and a plough disk.
I also have a paddded swivel seat made out of an old seat that swiveled through an eletric motor case. The remade seat swivel is purley the axel on the plough disk cut to height and a peice of pipe over it welded to the seat base wiht greased bearing balls inside- rustic but it does the job very well. I hope this gives some ideas

I have a stack of tractor seats and disc blades just waiting to be assembled similar to that. Mine will have a foot rest added to them and the upright will be pipe rather than a car axleshaft.

If you are going to make your own frame consider using three legs, it won't rock.

This one is still in mock up stage. Started with a two dollar locked up parts motor, pulled off all the block plates, coated it with penetrating oil and beat the pistons with a hammer till they freed up. Painted the block, need to finish polishing all the aluminum. Welded a plate to the crank shaft and when you spin on the seat, magic happens. Need to make a proper seat and base for it one of these days. My brother is making the standard tractor seat stools but using the main leafs off of Wagoneer spring packs for the legs.
