my "shop" is in my basement. the house has a 100 amp breaker box. i want to add a subpanel for my shop, and a 240 welder outlet. i have one space open in the box, so something will have to be moved to sub panel to make room. is 8- 3 wire big enough to run to the sub panel, or do i need 6-3? what size breakers should send power to the sub panel?thank you.

What is welder current draw? Make basement sub panel rating/feeder breaker a little bigger, then select wire size based on over current device.

Example, if welder is 40A, get a >50A panel (or even a 100A if you need more breaker positions) and a 50A breaker (in house panel) with #6 wire.

#8 wire would only support a 40A breaker/feeder service.

Who is the manufacturer of your main panel and what is the model number ?

Much easier to replace 2 existing breakers with a tandem.

If it is old and finding breakers is get difficult, you may want to swap in a 125-150A panel with more slots.

Too little information . . . .
. . . .
a) Distance from main panel to subpanel ??
b) Expected total loads EVER in the basement shop (Do it Once, Do it Right) ??
c) Pictures of your main panel (cover on . . . AND . . . cover off)

GJ Sparky's will give you all the details with enough information.

i apologize for not including enough info, thru research ive learned alot since i made that post. the box is a murray lc120df. the idea of a tandem breaker sounds like a winner to me, or maybe replacing the double breaker for the dryer to run a sub panel, then running the dryer from the sub. about distance from main to sub?- well, its 25 feet from the main to the new receptical. would it be better to have sub beside main with 25' of cable to recepticle, or have 25' coming from the main to the sub close to receptacle? thank you for all the replies.

What else do u plan on running on this subpanel concurrently with the welder? Air compressor, AC, etc???

What is welder current draw? Make basement sub panel rating/feeder breaker a little bigger, then select wire size based on over current device.

Depends on the type of wire... NM-b yes. THHN no.

You need to up size your main panel. The 100 amp panel isn't enough to supply the house and a sub panel.

How can u make that determination without knowing all the loads in the house? U have NO information to go on...
