If I was going to use a press to remove u joints, I'd make one of these, it presses on the cross to remove the caps one at a time. A lot less likely to bend something.

That's pretty neat. Would it be worth it to build something similar for a ball joint press? I think the BJP-1 would have enough clearance to use something like that.

The tiger tool is not as heavy duty........we have 2 at the shop, one is bent pretty bad. I dont see it being any faster than the ball joint press. The ball joint press is more versitile. I also use mine as a torsion bar tool.

May I also suggest a stout pair of straight tip snap ring pliers, 0.090" tip or 0.070" tip I can't remember. Helped a friend do his F350 and there was not a lot of room to get that snap ring off there.

I used to press all my u joints....then I discovered the local drive shop will press them out and in for $5. Yes $5. Its not worth doing them your self at that price. And since we are a shop they even pick up and deliver.

I imagine its a way for them to sell parts and they just have the guys do them in their down time between jobs. They sell a higher quality part than the parts house anyway. Probably doesnt hurt that they have a station set up with all of the various tools and it literally takes them about 3 minutes to knock them out.

It also earns them all of our other business as well, but I have taken things in there on my own time with no mention of the shop and it was the same price.

I agree I have two different sized tiger tools and the bigger one bent the first time I used it I threw it aside and forgot about getting it warrantied.

You can get the kent Moore equivalent j95223-3 or the larger version

They can be used with a ball joint press.

That kent moore tool looks like it would work perfect if it fits in a ball joint press. I like this style since you are only pressing one end cap out at a time when using the yoke to press on the actual U joint instead of pressing on the opposite end cap to push the U joint.

Any rough ideas on how far apart you want the yoke arms? And how long they should be and still fit in the BJP-1 snap on press?

If sime one isn't comfortable with the hammer and socket method I have had good luck 2 jaw pullers and sometimes pitman arm pullers.

OTC makes a fancy kit that consists of a large two jaw puller and a ton of adapters with a carrying case.
