I need a strap wrench to fit a flywheel of a John Deere GT235 lawn Tractor. The flywheel is larger than 8" in diameter. Anyone know where I can get one?

I've seen Briggs sells one specifically for small engine flywheels, not sure what size range it covers though.

Would a flywheel holder tool work? I have a Lisle 23800, and it's been great.

Last time I had to hold a water pump pulley I bought a truck oil filter wrench removed the rivet put it around the pullley and place a bolt in it I put a small thin rubber strip to keep it from slipping its my version of and overbuilt strap wrench. I got the fan clutch off without issue and I now have a dedicated tool for sizes X-Y.

You could also try a proper strap wrench but dip the strap in some sort of rubber coating to increase the grip. The rigid and other pro style tools are nothing like the craftmsn of HF rubber style strap wrenches...

That was before I got my pneumatic fan clutch set.

They sell them at the local Deere dealership, peterbilt dealer, Napa, and industrial supply shop so there's probably a local dealer around your area.

I'll look into it.
I've looked and the straps just aren't long enough.

When changing a cam pulley, I recut the timing belt I was replacing to fit a strap wrench I already had.

If you've got a strap wrench already, you can always use an old serpentine belt to make a longer strap.

Why do you need it? I just changed the flywheel on my GX345 last weekend and didn't need one? If you're trying to remove/install the bolt holding it on, use an impact.

This^.... BUT, if you are impact deficient, a ratchet strap will do the same thing as any of the above mentioned items and it is infinitely adjustable. :)

I have a BOA BO13010 and it fits up to 12" diameter objects I keep a fairly big serpentine belt with it for larger. It will accept any type of strap or belt in the 1" wide range.

Astroracer, thanks for the rachet strap tip.
It worked and the flywheel is off.0e695a7959eb3b339c892de3e8154f41.jpg
Now, is it really the stator that's bad..

Yes that ratchet strap idea is a great one.You can use a ratchet strap many times as a third hand,in alignment, when you are alone.Simple but effective, think of other ways and report back,we are all still learning.

First thing that came to mind after reading the belt comment as well. No impact?

No, no impact at this garage.... I have a pancake compressor in this garage. My other garage, the VW Bug garage I have a 60 gal compressor and more air tools than I can name (inherited from my father). Problem is I would have to pull the mower down to that garage and then back up to the front garage. Yes, I could get a battery powered one but at this time my use for it is minimal....until I get this mower problem figured out I'm off of all kinds of fun stuff. Like messing with the VW's; should be done tomorrow.

I'm trying to figure out what I can do to the engine while it is still on the mower. I don't want to take it off but it is tempting since I have the flywheel off. It is a Briggs & Stratton v twin vertical 18 hp.

Removing or replacing the engine on a JD lawn tractor is very easy and straight forward. No big surprise other than keep tract of which frame and case holes were used and the different lengths of bolts. My JD frame has bolt holes for different engines and the briggs engine case has holes that are not used on the JD frame.

Yeah, but if I remove the engine don't I have to take the PTO off first?

I use them to hang rearends in the chassis for mounting or mock-up. Works great when there aren't extra hands around...
