people comparing strut springs to lying under a vehicle need to understand there is a difference. If a car crushes you that's generally a basic tool failure. With a spring compressor the problem is the human element. The moment you let you guard down or stop respecting it is the moment you get seriously injured.

keep in mind those springs hold the vehicle up, the strut is just a damper.

This thing has to be used on THE FLOOR. DO NOT buy this piece of junk.

I've used a similar style tool to the schwaben made by RTI for the last 10 years and frankly I don't understand what you're taking about. You do know there are installations where the manufacturer specifically calls for this kind of compressor to remove a spring from the car, right?

Re: UPDATE: Need strut spring compressors recommendations

I have a set of those, a little better than HF, and have used them many times and they do work. BUT, it is a dangerous job and to say "what a load of ****" can get you into trouble. If you don't realise the extreme force behind those compressed springs then there is a problem. Those sticks do work, but please keep in mind that no matter what you are using compressing a spring is a dangerous job and not something to laugh at. The one big issue I have seen with those clamps is they "slide" down the spring and if they go to far it can lead to big problems.

Well I am laughing at it. I barely had to compress them a all in order to get the strut hat off (maybe an inch or more). If it miraculously broke lose what would it do? Jump up over the strut and hit me in the head? I don't think so. You guys really need to get a grip. Frightening people into purchasing overly complex and expensive tools that provide no safety value is questionable at best. Common sense is your friend when doing ANY auto repair job.

I was going to do the springs myself until I talked with my brother-in-law who is a tech. I told him about this thread and his response in an email was "Springs carry 1000 lbs of pressure when compressed ....can maim or kill." After that I decided on some quick struts!

By the same logic my car weighs 3500 lbs. so I should never work under it, or God forbid buy a lift....PAH...LEASE.

I have never heard of anyone getting maimed or killed doing their struts, have you?

To each their own. I have done dozens of struts and while nothing has happened it's becuase I have used common sense and realized the danger of a loaded strut and did the repair with caution. Guns aren't dangerous either, as long as you use common sense and realise they can cause serious harm. Neither is something to laugh at. But if you feel the need to laugh at something that can cause severe damage go ahead. No skin off my back if something happens to you. We are all big people and can make our own decisions on how much we respect dangerous things. Using your analogy of going under a car, I go under a car all the time. But using common sense and realising that the danger is there for the car to fall I take a few precautions, like using jack stands in case the jack gives out. Making sure the car is on level ground, also choke the wheels. Just like spring compressors are safe to use if you use common sense. Common sense is realising when there is a possibility of danger and respecting that danger and working safe. Laughing at a loaded spring is not using commone sense.

yes because all strut springs are the same.
