I don't know what the f is in the grout in the bathroom around a toilet from a tenant, but it will not clean up. My wife has tried everything.

I also tried bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and the windex sanitizer. It is still grummy and dark. Can only imagine what is in it.

I have pulled the toilet and replaced and inspected the wax ring and there are no leaks or dampness. It is positively stains of some sort.

Amazon, HD, Menards, etc have so many grout cleaners to choose from with good reviews.

Anybody have any tips or can point us in the right direction?

At this point I'm gonna try acid but put that on pause for a bit.

saw an acid wash used one time that had amazing results but I have noo idea what the solution was. it made grungy old grout look like new.
but
could use a carbide knife ( type for sscoring & cutting plastic laminate) scrape the joints a bit & re grout.

That 'carbide knife' used for scraping out old grout is actually called a ...

grout saw.

I know, shocking revelation. :lol_hitti

If the 'stain' is anything organic (mold, etc), then bleach is going to, well, bleach it.

An acid-based cleaner may work, but it WILL dissolve at least some of the grout.

FWIW.

I have had good luck with a small steamer like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XHXFHWG/?tag=atomicindus08-20
Read the reviews that mention grout
I've since used it on granite counter tops too.

And... new house, carpet installer got cut on nail strips, bled all over the adjoining new tile and grout.

I tried everything to get that blood out-no luck, so when the tile installer came back I asked her.
She mixed up some of the same grout (thin) and rubbed it over the ****** grout/wiped it up, and the blood disappeared/gone !
:D

Acid is a bad idea since it can dissolve or weaken not only grout but some of the thinset mortar under your tiles. Bleach or even something like drano, a super strength base, would likely cause less damage.

At some point it might just be easier to use something like a Fein multi tool to remove the affected grout and then do some touch up grouting.

My wife swears by Comet Cleanser. Dampen the area, apply a liberal amount and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Use a good stiff brush.

Acid will also do a number on bathroom fixtures.

See if you can rent an actual commercial steamer (not a hot water carpet cleaner ) to clean the grout.

I have a brush from Amazon that goes on my rechargeable drill and it works well for grout cleaning.
Try enzyme cleaner or peroxide cleaner, they both brighten grout well.
If all else fails, i get a tungsten carbide tip for my Dremel tool, rout out the grout, and regrout it. It could be piss stains from someone with a poor aim.

Similar to the comet suggestion above, I used OxiClean pretty successfully recently on grout. I was pretty amazed how well it worked.

If your grout is a common color, just get a grout pen or grout recolor and go over top of it.
