need timing belt set up/timing belt marks

i need the timing belt set up
or the timing belt marks

going to try and tackle it this morning, so i need your help

You should be able to see the marks after the cover is off . I assume you bought a T-belt kit along with a waterpump ? A good kit will actually have instructions pointing out the marks. Try VWvortex.com for an in depth search .

That engine is not one I would want to tackle without having the proper procedure. Do yourself a favor and go to AllData online and buy a 1 year subscription for your car. Its about $30 and will give you all of the factory procedures and adjustments etc. I would also replace the tensioner and would not use anything other than a factory VW belt.

There is a mark on the crank, but not one on the cam.

You know you are right when the crank is lined up. There is a slot in the cam that has a hole behind it. Vw has a special pin that locks the cam. The slot at about 9:00 is the one with the hole.

Here is how I do those belts.
1)line up the crank. The cam will have the notched section at the top. (This is on the face of the cam, it looks like a mouth)

2) paint 3 marks on the cam/belt and 1 on the crank/belt.

Then take the belt off and transfer the marks. Line the marks back up with the marks on the cam and crank.

You should not have to move the gears at all. To add some redundancy, you can mark the crank to the flange(on the engine) and the crank to the head.

I don't take the 13mm bolts on the cam off. No need.
