My POS Kenmore died so I need to buy a new dehumidifier, 25 to 35 pint size with no pump. Any recommendations? I see Grainger has a Dayton for $300, is that brand any good? Thanks!!

I bought an dehumidifier years ago (2005-6?) in a sort of emergency (came back from a summer weekend getaway to find a swampy finished basement).

I ran to Home Depot and got what they had - a ~$190 LG. It has worked great ever since, and at my last house, it was used on a near 50% duty cycle for half the year for 5+ years. It has never given me trouble.

What failed on the dehumidifier? I just resuscitated a mid-90s Kenmore unit with a new compressor start capacitor (ordered online from sears.com), and it's once again chugging away.

Just a note that if it is a dehumidifier that runs a lot (like mine at my last house), a new one could be a good investment just due to efficiency. If it is for occasional use then as long as it works that is all that matters.

My Kenmore got really hot one day so I stopped using it. Then I hear that there is a recall for that problem. I get a notice but then they tell me my unit serial # isn't covered.

Danby Premier by far is the best I've found out there...
It absolutely will NOT ice up when the air temp is low(64 degF).

Lowes & HHGregg carries them.

I bought a Danby Premiere unit 3 years ago, it runs all the time and drains into a floor drain, never had an issue with it.

I have the same story to tell, except that mine is a Frigidaire sourced from Best Buy. It was purchased around 2007, is living in its second house, and runs as well now as it did the day I bought it. My only complaint is with myself: I've never set up the continuous drain feature. Every couple days during the summer, I have to carry the filled bucket up from the basement and dump it down the drain.

I have a Frigidaire I bought around 2010. I do have the continuous drain set up and it runs fine. The only thing I have to is clean the filter on the thing every once in a while.

I have two Whirpool and one LG. I might have $75 invested in the whole collection of them. (thrift stores) Cleaned the coil on one of the Whirlpools yesterday. It was matted with cat fur and dust from the laundry room. It pulled the little bathroom I had it running in yesterday down to 31% Relative Humidity. (Not bad, considering I live in the swamp and it was raining all day).

I still prefer the units with manual knob controls rather than electronic brains. I can set one with manual controls on a heavy duty appliance timer and cycle it x hours per day, cut it off at night so I don't have to listen to it...

Ours bit the dust last Fall and we bought a LG from HD. Works fine. The other sat in the basement till this Spring and I decided to take it apart to recycle the plastic and etc. Well....found out it had a filter on it.....dah! really clogged.... And I also found that the fan had came off the motor shaft. Reinstalled, cleaned filter, and it's now in the new shop working well.

The newer higher efficiency units have finer coils that collect dust (like an air conditioner). Make sure whatever you buy new has a washable filter.
Also, some units are rated to be used in the winter, because they have freeze protection. Some do not. Get one that can be used below 70F.

LG makes an excellent unit.
