The "old timers" used a pocket knife, and cooked the balls over the branding fire for a quick snack. I never tried them, I figured it just added insult to injury for the calf.

Also, typically when bull calves are castrated they are de-horned as well. Horns can be burned or clipped off. You pretty much have the choice of a) the smell of burning hair or b) blood everywhere.
