Need to install wall mounted tire rack in this location

Hello all. I want to install a wall mounted tire rack in the location of the black square. The 2 x 4s are the perfect space apart but I don't know if just mounting to them would put stress on them. Total weight of rack and tires would be about 200#. Mounting suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

You would think it would be strong enough to hold it. What I would worry about is how many nails were used when the girt was put up.


I suppose if you were in doubt, you could glue/screw a piece of 3/4" plywood between the girts and attach the tire rack through the plywood and into the 2x4 girt.

It should help spread the weight out evenly and allow the use of slightly longer lag screws.

You could also run the piece of plywood all the way up to the outside 2x12 header. That would provide additional support and allow you mount the rack a little higher using bolts and T-nuts.

Your Baker scaffold is in the way, you can't mount it there! LOL
you're very likely fine with what you're thinking, but to be sure you could scab on a 2x4 or 2x6 vertically(on the flat) to the girts on the outside edge of your tire rack,s o the rack sits on the original 2x( and the new vertical 2x just ties them together for added security

I just want to echo the idea of running a nice 2 x 6 lag screwed in to span those two posts and then fasten a piece of nice thick ply to that and the header. Then I would bolt the rack to the ply using some nice big washers to distribute the load. You can make the plywood area large enough to hang the rack where you need it so you are not forced into having it too high. Getting wheels and tires off a rack with a ladder is not the best idea.

I agree about going up. A plywood behind it only helps a little, the frame is bolted 4x anyway, it self stiffens. If there are no bottom bolts the ply would add a little extra.

No. This is not good.

That rack is designed to mount to studs, so you'll need a stud-like structure going floor to ceiling. Even if you add plywood, the exterior wall will bend and weaken.

Uh, that is why we are telling him to put some sturdy bracing between those big-*** 6" x 6" posts you see and tie it to the 2" x 12" header. That is plenty strong for a tire rack. Nobody here is telling him to go ahead and use those purlins for anything.

Make sure the wall will be able to support it and then you shouldn’t have any issues

If I were to do it, I wouldn’t mount it in the center of the 2x4’s, I would move the rack to one side near one of the beams, and lag that one side of the rack to it also.

This is really complicated and many of the ideas above (using horizontal members) are not strong. The rack cantilevers off the wall and this puts stress in the horizontal members (No matter if they are a 2X6, 2X12, or plywood.) in the direction where they are weakest.

This is the best way to go. It provides vertical members that can withstand the cantilever forces and will tuck inside the posts. The structure can also be used for other great storage!

It also follows the instructions, but who cares about that?

Good evening. I am doing the wall. You guys are right, I do have the scaffolding and any other heavy stuff that I can hand there. I take it, 7/16 OSB should do the trick.

Those studs are not real helpful unless at least toe nailed into the girts. I might even put some Liquid Nails between the studs and girts before nailing/screwing.

Some L O N G GRK screws (at least 4-1/2 through the 2x4s (pre drilled) would be even better !

I finally finished mounting the tire rack. I still need to get the rest of the scaffolding parts off the floor. I want to thank everyone for the help.
