My new-to-me house has a large 240 Volt vertical tank compressor in the basement. It is copper piped to the attached garage.

i want to move it into the 30' x 40' shop to use it there instead.

There is a nice wide concrete staircase from the basement into the garage, and the railing around it even has a gate over the door at the bottom.

Originally i thought that with a heavy duty appliance dolly, my son and I could get it up the stairs but when I look at similar units I see they can weigh 700 lbs, much more that I'm able to pull...

Looking for ideas on how to get it up and out.

+1 on taking it apart, I always move large compressors by removing pump and motor since I damaged one. It just isn't worth the risk and makes it so much more manageable....

+2 take it apart. Dropping it would ruin it, seen it done before. It's 20 minutes to take apart, $1500 wasted if you don't. Your back and your billfold will appreciate it if you take it apart. It's also a good time to drain the oil and refill it when you can tilt compressor to get all the oil out.

And as long as it is apart, disassemble and clean the rust off the check valve. Mine didn't work, took it apart and just wiped it off with wd-40 and a scotch brite pad, good as new.

The check valve sits between the tank and pump.
