I'm getting ready to sell my house. Which means I'm going to have to find a way to move EVERYTHING in my shop. I really need to go through and get rid of a bunch of things and get better organized before the move happens. What do you guys think is worth keeping or just tossing as I clean up? I'm looking at things like rolls of tape, zip ties, electrical connectors. little things like that, that end up all over the shop. Thanks for your help.

Hi Stephen,

I'm going through a similar process right now, just without selling the house. The reason for me is better usage of the space i have. So i sort through the boxes and just decide as I go if the given thing is worth keeping in the shop, if it goes to the storage garage or if it gets tossed. And if specially the small parts like tape, zip ties... are all sortet, organized and each item group in their bins, they take up less space than cluttered all around and for that reason much more easy to move. No need in tossing small useful materials just because they are not organized.

So my idea of the process would be sorting and organizing as you go, scrap what needs to be scrapped and find yourself with an organized shop at your new place. This advice is only true when we are talking hobby shop here. If its your business, time is money and consumables are often not worth the time to sort them out, so its cheaper to just throw them away.

best of luck with the move and regards

Sven

Some people set a $ threshold, and everything below that amount gets tossed. I've also heard of people setting a usage threshold, so if you haven't used something in X months or years, toss it. These methods are usually used on hoarders, though.

I think I'm borderline hoarder. haha. In all reality I do come from a family of hoarders, so I'm trying to break that mold.

I recently packed things up in storage, rented out my house and commercial condo traveled the country for a year and then moved into a new house. Not wanting to pay storage on things that weren't worth it we really pared down to bare bones. My wife and I did the same thing with our house and I had a lot of garage items to pare down.

I had literally bought an additional property for my car parts. I decided what I couldn't bare to let go of and then sold was I could followed by having a couple friends over to pick thru the parts that way if I needed anything later they agreed to hook me up if they hadn't used it.

The house hold items were the same way except it was easy to donate items as we got a huge tax deduction at the end of the year.

It feels good to have gotten down to fighting weight with my car parts. eBay and the car forums make it so easy to get odd old parts these days. My garage is no longer packed with wall to wall shelves storage bins.

I will save that there are some items we miss and think did we really get rid of ______. Over all it has been worth it it.

Good luck it took us a couple months to do it.

I had a fire and it reduced a chunk of it. I collected a lot back but although some items are impossible I try to process as much of it to a usable material where it can be stacked and have some out of the way storage that I keep stuff I might be able to use,,, and I do. Once I have stored it I release it from value and its free, I will make anything out of it or cannibalize, give or trade.
We pull a lot of parts from our collection. I don't save any car parts to speak of, most of it aint worth it in todays world, we buy new or reman on occasion.
