How quick do you need the money? For the most out of it, would need to split up and list in sets on eBay. If you list it on CL you will have to deal with a bunch of losers and lowballers. it's some very nice stuff there. But on CL I'd say you'd be lucky to get $1500-2000 but it's worth more than that IMO. Nobody really has the cash to put out like that.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, was he an airplane mechanic by chance?

Take an overall picture of the boxes. What is in the other ~20 drawers in the bottom box(es)? There is alot of money in there, BUT. Getting someone to buy it all in one lump sum is going to require a large discount. As Lx460 mentioned, to get the most money out of it you need to break things up and sell individually, however that can and will take a long time. How much time, effort and patience do you want to invest vs what you get?

Where are you located? Someone on here might be able and willing to help.

My condolences to you and family.

You have lots of great tools. If you are in no hurry and take time to sell them individually or by sets on eBay you will do well. On Craigslist you might find a buyer that wants to buy the whole thing at a very steep discount as people done have that kind of cash laying around. Or you can list them here and fellow Garage Journal members might buy the individually as what they need. I will buy some from you especially those screwdrivers and some ratchets.

The name snap on will get you more than average on the tools.

Take your time on selling and look around for other people selling those types of tools.
Try ebay.

Looks like he was very organized. My condolences for your loss

I agree with the others.. If you split it up and sell it in sets you will probably double your money.. If you sell it in one chunk no one will pay what it's actually worth.

If you end up selling on ebay i will gladly buy some off of you. Im 19 yrs old and currently trying to build up my box. I would probably be interested in all the snap ring plyers some wrenches and maybe the nut drivers.

My condolences to you and your family.

As others said, selling the tools in sets is the best way to get the most money for them. You c ok uld try using the classifieds here, if you dont mind shipping stuff. I might be interested in some of those black handles screwdrivers.

From his posts, I gather he is looking for a fair price to offer his Grandmother for the tools because he wants them. I don't think he is trying to sell anything...

Tough position to be in. Don't want to lowball your Grandma but if she tries to sell herself she will likely get taken advantage of. After years of hearing that there's 180k in tools, she might think that's what the value is. If that's the case it will be a hard pill to swallow about the real world value.

That is a tough situation. I'm sure if she didn't have the bills to pay she would probably give them to you for free. If you have the money to spare and it won't put you in a bind I would say 2k. But only if you have the money.

Yes eBay is the best way. You don't want everything good craigslist can bring your way as far as the quality of people

I see more than 2k here, I'm thinking around 3-4k for what is shown, and the box itself, if broken up as sets. All of it is used, some of it quite a bit, but it doesn't look abused. What else is there? A set of 3/4" sockets can be $1000 pretty quickly. Pullers and specialty items add up quickly. scanners are expensive new, but age quickly.

I surly wouldn't be giving new truck value when I can't see brands or how abused they are.

why don't you just piss on his grandpa's grave by offering $200? You could've at least done it privately. Come on, get real, there's at least 10 SO ratchets I can see. That set of 4 ways alone is close to $400 on eBay. I'd figure the ratchets would bring minimum $45-50 on eBay each probably more.

Besides...He's not trying to sell the stuff. He's trying to come up with a fair offer to buy it from his grandma without ripping her off.

Then he has to spend months of time selling it all one at a time. Again I can't see all that's there

If it were mine, I'd use it as electrolysis anodes before selling it for $200. The only way selling 10 ratchets and a wrench set on eBay would take a month is if it took you a week to list each item. A couple pics and the tool part number would sell itself. You could start it at .99 have it listed in less than an hour and not even worry about it. Would certainly sell for what I quoted. What difference does it make if they are broken even? You call SO and they send you a rebuild kit...

I'll throw another vote in there in the 1750-2250 range. We don't know what's in the bottom drawers, but I'm guessing diagnostics tools and the likes.

If you read through the Garage Sale thread you'll get a feeling for what other people are paying for similar stuff that you have pictured there. Luckily it doesn't look like you have any oddball tools there, so finding previous sales should be easy enough. If you're looking to buy off family I'd find some previous example sales and use them for price tags - that way it's 'market value'

Last thing, buying or selling a lot of tools like this in bulk always leads to a heavy discount (40-50%). It's really hard to find:

1) somebody who needs a full set of tools - most people either start small or already have a good baseline.

2) somebody with 1700 cash ready to spend.

If you want the stuff maybe offer her your 8k for all of it. That way you get to keep gramps tools im sure he would have liked that. But its hard to say without seeing everything. And it depends on what your grandma thinks its worth. If she thinks there is 150,000 worth of tool she might get pissed at your offer. But trying to sell tools like that is alot of work to get top dollar. You are going to be mailing **** all over the world

If it weren't snap on I'd say a 750-1000, since it is snap on, 150k sounds totally reasonable...

If grandma thinks it is worth 150,000 she needs to be educated as to the real value of tools. It looks closer to maybe 15k.
It is kind of silly to expect current prices of old stuff, c-man and Matco do you gather the same price as Snap on.
As several people have pointed out you will get better prices if you break it up and place it on e-bay but if it is not rare or a wanted item it rarely gets top dollar. Things like moon wrenches do not get that much interest, but 1/4 inch deep universals can draw a high amount as they were only made for a few years.
The other aspect of selling on e-bay is how much is your time worth and how much you spend on each transaction, you need to deduct that from the selling price to determine how much profit you really make on a sale.
& when you get into some paypal disputes because there were more scratches on the tool than listed profit goes in to the dumper.

I think he meant $200 for the angle wrenches not for the lot that would be crazy

I would make every attempt to keep them in the family. It takes a lifetime to assemble tools like that. Shame to see it go to some sleazeball on ebay or CL. I'm sure he would want his grandson to have them.
