I have another thread up regarding a new shed that I'm building, and I thought it would be wise to ask for some input specifically around wiring.
Here's the situation: My house is a ranch. Electrical service connects on the South end of the home (the house is positioned N-S on the long axis) to a 200A panel. From that panel, there is a 100A breaker connected to a disconnect switch (the other input is from a portable generator) and then to a sub-panel where things like my well pump and many light circuits are connected. The sub-panel also feeds ANOTHER sub-panel through ANOTHER 100A breaker. This second panel has all of my kitchen (gas stove), laundry room (we don't run the electric dryer off of gen power ever), and garage.
I'm building a shed on the North end of my property which puts it in close proximity to my garage (happens to be where the second sub-panel is located). In the new shed, I need to have a couple of 110V circuits (might as well install 20A for each) to run some outlets and lights. I currently own NO 220V tools.
In the *existing* shed (NW corner of property, well away from the house), I have a single 15A 110 circuit and need to ADD a 220V 50A circuit. While I'm at it, I will likely run an additional 110V 20A circuit for outlets and leave the existing 15A circuit for lights. This existing shed is going to become my welding workshop. And, in the future, if I need a larger space, I will take it down and build an entirely new shed in its place.
I've been struggling with how to get all of the circuits out to the two sheds and where to connect everything. My gut tells me that I should run a 100A Sub-Panel out to the new shed and connect it to the main panel. The only issue I could see with doing this (aside from the cost) is that I would have NO POWER in the shed if my street service were out.
I will NEVER weld unless street power is available, so there is absolutely no danger in ever over-taxing the generator in that regard.
Should I upgrade the service level on my first sub-panel and tap off of there so that the 15A/20A circuits in the shed would be generator fed? Or are the better ways to get what I need?
Any thoughts are welcome. I'll also take manual labor and straight-up donations.
