I'm wanting to build a work bench for in my garage.I got some 2x4's and 3/4 plywood.I'm thinking 24" wide x 60" long and around 34" high.I'm wanting to have drawers under the top for keeping misc hardware and maybe screwdrivers.I thought about using these and mounting them underneath.I can get them at lowes for $40 a pc.

Only thing is they are red and all my other stuff is black.I can paint them black to match the rest of boxes.Any other ideas for adding drawers to a workbench?I dont want to use fullsize chest because I want to have a shelf on the bottom for storing bigger tools.

In my shop I will be making the workbench decision soon. My only hard decision is that most everything below 7 foot will be easily movable. I may have a bench that may never move in 30 years, but it will have the capability.

I have a plan of using repurposed material and it is abundant to me.
Wood and metal and pipe I can get almost free and I don't get too worked up over a few nail hole blemishes.

I have a bad habit of spotting idea everywhere. A walk through J. C. Penneys had me examining their display tables that were a combination of 4x4 wood and 2" pipe with metal brackets for the wood and a modular design that had tops of 2 foot by 4 foot that could be quickly combined to 2x4, 2x8 and any height from 2 foot to 8 foot in 6 inch increments.

Right now I have a solid door on a poor 2x4 frame that is set at table height to work with as I finish my cleaning, wiring, plumbing and such.
Some of my recent work has been done on sawhorses with a couple of 2x4s and a baking tray!

34" high is on the short side, and 24" deep is definitely too shallow if you have a choice in the matter. 30-32" of depth will make the work surface a lot more useful, in my opinion. (34-38" of depth will make the back end a magnet for clutter, however.) 36" is standard counter/bench height. A lot of guys like 37-42".

You could mount two or three of those boxes on top of each other and make shelves on the other side for taller miscellaneous things

You can see what I did for my bench. This was taken this last winter. Built with 2x4s. Double 3/4" plywood top and a 32"x24"x1/8" steel plate on the left end where the vise is mounted to pound on stuff.

Probably $175 in materials.

Base your workbench height on your personal height. I believe mine are 40" tall and I'm just over 6'. It's comfortable to me. I'd make them deeper like Jack said.

Try mocking something up with some boxes, cardboard and tape. If you're buying a sheet of 3/4" plpywood, I'd try to take advantage of the entire length (96") if you can. This is where mock up goes along way in visualizing what works for you before you build it.

My original plan for my workbench including some Cman bottom boxes for fastener storage. After opening one box up and finding a large dent, I wasn't happy and decided they were to flimsy for what I wanted. I ended up buying some bins and making shelves for those to sit on. You can see pics of my bench in the refurb thread in my sig. Any questions, just shout out.

The reason I'm going with 24" depth is I dont have much space in my garage. With a 24" deep bench I will have enough room to move around when I have a vehicle in the garage. As far as length and height goes I'm still trying to work that out.

Well here is my workbench. It is still not finished...you know how that goes. I got a lot of ideas from the Family Handyman website and just searching images of workbenches in Google.

I incorporated different features that are really handy, I think. Each picture shows a different feature of the workbench. That is why there are so many pics. The workbench surface is 2.5' x 8' and is 42" above the floor. Let me know if you have any questions.

The features include:

Pic 1. Overhead Lights and magnetic tools strips mounted to the 6" deep shelf 18" above the workbench surface.

Pic 2. Oversized pullout drawer above a roll-out drawer (for the heavy stuff).

Pic 3. Slide-out drawer panel for 4 jack stands, hardware organizer and two wheel blocks.

Pic 4. Pull-out under workbench trash can.

Pic 5. Tool cart stores under workbench.

Pic 6. The Kids' workbench...gota start them out in the garage early.

Thanks guys. Hockey88fan, I had to move the fox logo above the lights when I mounted them to the workbench. I made that too. It was an old motorcycle chain that I welded each link to hold the Fox shape.
