Right, so I'm new to this site, this would be my first post here, and I hope its in the right place
I've been looking all over the Internet for ideas on different garages that people have built, someone linked me here today, and I figured it would be a good idea to join! I've already seen a lot of nice garages and gotten a few good ideas for things I'd like to impliment.
The deal is, I'm about to move, and we really need a lot more garage space than we have. I'm 18, and still living at home for the minute. The house I lived in when I was born was designed by my dad, and it had a two car garage, plus a full basement underneath the house which was 2 cars wide, 2 cars deep on one side, and 3 cars deep on the other side, for a total of a 5 car basement. That coupled with the 2 car garage up top was plenty of space for us.
We moved out of that house and have only had 2 car garages plus a 12x20 shed since then, and our car, motorcycle, and boat arsenal has only increased.
Currently the plan is to buy a house on a 1 acre + piece of land with a two car garage already attached, and then to build an 8 car garage/workshop behind the house. One of the houses we're looking at possibly buying is on more than 10 acres. Currently the car count stands at 7, and the motorcycle count is more than 20, so we really need the space.
I've done a few basic floor-plan drawings in Photoshop which I will post in a moment, but I'll do my best to describe the garage as well.
We want an 8 car garage that is 4 bays wide and 2 bays deep, with a workshop, bathroom, and multipurpose room added on to one end. Each of the garage doors as well as the bays will be over-sized (gotta fit big stuff in there!) and part of the garage will likely have a second story. Each space needs to be big because we'll be working on stuff, not just storing cars. We would like plenty of electrical outlets, as well as compressed air plumbed into the building with a large central compressor.
Here's a basic floor-plan layout (not to scale) of the first floor:
The loft is over the second set of car bays at the back of the garage. In reality it is more of a 6 car garage because the 2 bays at the back left side of the garage are taken up by the stairs, but that's okay because we can put motorcycles back there. We would like each of the supporting pillars (4 total) to house a couple electrical outlets, as well as quick disconnects for the plumbed air, which would allow us to easily access any of the "8" car bays.
The workshop area would likely have workbenches on 2 sides, and there would need to be space for 2 full sized roll-away tool chests and one shorter one. We've got a grinder, drill press, table saw, anvil, welder, compressor, and lots of other things which we would like to try and find space for. The only thing tool wise we would need to get would be a lift. (hopefully a 2 post lift) Basically we just wanna stuff it layed out and get things organized so we don't have to set each tool up individually each time we want to use it. We've got all the tools, we just lack the space.
As far as the bathroom goes, it would be nice to have a toilet, sink, and at least a stall type shower so that when you get real dirty in the garage you can shower before going back in the house.
The multipurpose room would likely have counters and such in it, as well as a large laundry sink for washing large objects.
The second story will be more of a balcony, for either storing a few boxes, or we might make it a "chilling" area for relaxing in a more "man oriented" fashion
Layout of the second floor:
Its pretty simple.
The other thing we were debating was to add a room above the workshop and bathroom/multipurpose room so that we could store stuff. The only downside to that is you would loose the "open air" feel in the workshop unless the ceilings were above 10ft.
The floor-plan for the 2nd story would then look like this:
Anyway, that was quite the first post, sorry its so long!
Just give me ideas, constructive criticism, tell me what you think, etc etc. Open to any ideas, and suggestions from people who have done this before!
Thanks!
