I am wanting to do a part of my shop for a hang out area and looking for ideas. I have some room, size of the shop is 30x40, thinking on doing at least a 12x12 area. Any Ideas and pictures would be awesome.

Make moving/rolling wall partitions
You can also use these as welding shields or dust shields when working in the garage.
Make a workbench/bar on wheels., good for little repair jobs and good for entertaining.
Install a nice TV on a moving arm mount so you can watch TV when relaxing or when working. Good for watching instructional videos.
Install a sink and counter. Good for shop and entertaining use.
Use durable yet easy to move all weather tolerant furnature. You can use then in the garge, on the patio and easy to move where you need them or out of the way.

Put carpet something down but be sure it's easily washable so it can be hosed off. Outdoor carpet or grass turf stuff

Bar stocked with beer and liquor. Stripper pole in the corner.

X 2!

If you are going to have any number of friends over getting drunk there are 2 other things I would advise based on my own personal experience:

1. Get lots of chairs. More than you think you will need.

2. Make sure they are cheap chairs, as your drunk friends will break them.

I think once you designate it as a hangout area, it ceases to be a garage...if the guys want to come over, isn't there a box or a spare tire or engine block or something they can sit on?

I regularly host MotoGP and WSBK race watching parties in my workshop.

Pretty simple. High mounted flat screen, HD satellite, surround sound with multiple subwoofers, Red Bull display refrigerator stocked with beer, clean off the bench tops and lay down newspaper so I can put out food. Set up a motorcycle lift table as a coffee table. Move the motorcycles to the edges of the space or otherside of the workshop and then put out stackable plastic Adirondack chairs.

Now that it is nice out, I'll probably open the garage doors and park the bikes out and make use of the picnic table and barbecue grill I have outside.

12X12 gets small fast, I did a 12X24 That doubles as an easy to heat small project room in the cold weather.

Here is our hangout area.

I used the booth from our kitchen since we will be getting a new table. It gets used all the time now!
