Needle Stud finder Help

I just got these from amazon. It appears I need some kind of holder.

Does anyone have experience with these?

I think they are just for sticking it through the sheet rock to find the stud. I'd get a strong magnet instead to find the screws. Or one of the Franklin Prosensors.
