I found this today and was wondering what kind of cabinet its is and if it is really for tools, maybe a salesman sample, dentists chest?

its solid wood looks to be walnut.
I don't think the tools on the lid would stay put if the lid was closed. Such an odd ball collection. I think some one just repurposed a Neiman Marcus box for this.
Neiman-Marcus has sold all kinds of novelty items in the past, usually in their Christmas catalog. It may have been some sort of high priced home tool kit.
