I am loving this great website and would love to share many of my tools and stories and pics. But I am a little nervous to show them because I am concerned about the wrong person seeing them . What do you think , how do you folks feel about showing your tools and shop to maybe the wrong people ending up maybe your shop being broken in and robbed ?
Appreciate your response

That's what the security system and insurance is for. Personally I feel safer showing things here than I would working with the door open, well that is if there was anyone driving or walking by. My shop is back in the woods.

Probly but maybe you should have used an alias as your login name. This coming from someone who also used the wrong format for my name here! Welcome to the GJ!

I think that most that post on these forums are people that have worked for what they have. Proper security and insurance should handle those that aren't.

PS I thought that this thread was going to be about lending tools to friends and neighbors.

I don't have a garage full of "trendy" tools to look at. My tools are old basic working tools that don't excite the kind of people you are afraid of.

Actually that is a great question.

We are all easy to find these days.

I just looked up your name on White Pages. It gave me the address and phone number and a map with satellite view. I can see your lean to addition on the northwest corner of the back of your house with the garage adjacent. Took about a minute.

What kind of tools have you got? And when do you go on vacation?

that is too funny...
And so true, we must all be careful with what we post online, however, paranoia can get pretty effing old, pretty fast.

I don't think there are many people profiling their next heist on this forum - not impossible. But there are a lot of things easier to fence for greater return then old used tools. That being said, if you have a garage full of unused Snapon stuff, with a brand new Lexus in the background, I might use some discretion.

Check out other posts, there are a lot of ppl posting pictures of very expensive homes, tools, cars, possessions, and the like - havn't seen anything put up about being robbed as a result.

Don,
As a basic security measure you may not want to post your full name along with your town and state.
I only use the initial of my last name. I don't need a cutesy internet name, most folks know me as Scott, but I also don't need to broadcast my last name. I imagine if someone wants to find out who I am they will be able to, but I don't need to make it easy for them.

Other than that I try not to worry too much about security. Basic locks to keep out the basic criminals.

I am obviously not that worried about it. I have posted photos of my house and garage (see my sigline), have my basic location on my profile and would not be hard to find. I am well insured, and have a lot of friends I can count on for a hand.

That said, a little common sense goes a long way.

Since when were cops people you could trust?

Don, We hear what you are saying, and yes I do remember some one on the car site that had their car stolen, but I wasn't from a member of the group. Chances are very slim that posting here would increase your odds, I would say working in your garage at night or any time with the doors open would be a whole lot more risk. Welcome and enjoy. If you are that concerned over it. Close out this account and reopen a diff. one with a diff name. Again Welcome....Richie

First sorry for my negative comment. Second you don't have to be a whackjob or paranoid to be worried about our police force. Recently in Des Moines were I live a police officer called in for help changing a tire on his police cruiser after he committed a hit and run and they found him high on meth with meth in his car. Also at a county club at a golf coarse here an officer was drunk and decided he was gonna **** the woman serving drinks at the bar. His partner walked in, seen what was going on and instead of stopping it he pet her hair, held her down and told her everything was going to be alright because the police were here. Police are not your friend. You may have a friend that is a policeman that is different. It is not in there best intrest to look after your well being and it shows all over the news. The three officers I have talk about are all under no charges and there only punishment was to be put on unpaid leave. What friends to have!

It all depends on what one believes , as for me -no way in this day & age . With that said it would seem to me that if your going to openly display your possessions to the world of the internet you might be wise to take some additional precautions .

Maybe Don C. could start over again with an account with a different screen name. Email a moderator and see about making a fresh start by closing his current account without braking the rule about only having one account.
My experience with two burglaries at my work place in the past three years is that neighbors and workers coming in to work are ones you have to watch.

Why don't you leave your personal views of the police out of this and stick to the subject, or say nothing!

Just don't post your address.

One should be careful with geotagging a picture (smart phones, as an example, can put gps data into the metadata of the picture) you upload a pic to photobucket someone could download the pic and get a very accurate location of what ever you took the picture of. This geotagging us deselect able on my phones now.

Thanks for all the comments , I have had a webpage/ daily blog for 7 years showing my projects being built . So far no bad experiences so I am sure the guys here are honest and would not steal another mans tools. Now days anyone can find anyone on line so I am going to go ahead and share some of my tools. I do have a shotgun at both doors rigged to a string when the door opens from the outside , they are aimed at just knicking off off a piece of the robbers ear so it would be easy for the police to find them, lol just kidding.
