Nest thermostat thoughts?

I've been intrigued by the Nest for a while, but at $250 the numbers didn't make sense in my head. I want something that will actually save money, rather than just look cool on the wall (which is the biggest concern of Amazon reviewers it seems like). Then I learned my local gas company offers a $100 rebate for installing it. That makes it a little more palatable, especially if I can find a deal (just missed a killer cyber Monday deal at Target. If I can get it around $100 total after rebate, the ROI should be around 1 year from what I'm reading.

Anyone who has one, care to comment on the reliability and cost savings?

Try a search, lots of threads on them.

In short, I have 2 and would buy them again. You get a monthly report on you energy usage, I'm certain mine have saved me money.

i have three of them and my son has one. we find them incredibly valuable as we are on a time of use/peak time electric plan and we can program them so only one is ever on at a time to reduce the peak load.

they a great product.

Will they indicate how much propane is being used?

In what units?

Ecobee 3

superior in just about everyway.

I popped in here to say exactly this, I currently have a honeywell smart thermostat and have been researching for a replacement and the ecobee seems like the best thing out there at the moment because of the sensors in multiple rooms. I would definitely opt for it instead.

I've got three and would highly recommend them. They're very easy to program, which is great, but the really valuable thing is that you can look at a *daily* report of heat use. You can see exactly when and for how long the Nest ran over the past two weeks.

I have no doubt that a Nest can save you $250 over a few years, maybe even over just one. If you're not using any scheduling, then the Nest (or any programmeable thermostat) is a big win and likely gigantic savings. Better yet is that daily report of energy use: last winter I made use of the daily report to see exactly what my winterizing and weatherproofing changes were doing to energy use. In the end, I was able to reduce heating costs by about 30% and I was able to learn that by tracking the changes I made each day in relation to the energy used.
