so todays project is to build out my master closet in my new house,we have made the decision to hang EVERYTHING.so i picked up some 1'' galvenized pipe, cut it to the length's i need and want to paint it.told the wife that we can only use plastic hangers and i'm painting them with duplicolor caliper paint and primer.i've been using it for a week now and am very happy with the durability of it.must be the ceramic in it.

but i've heard that you have to nuatralize galvenized before painting,is it true to use white vinegar to do so?

White vinegar (or Brown) will work. I've seen both used with success. A cold zinc compound in spray cans also works well, acting like a primer for the paint. It bonds very well to the galvanize then the paint bonds well to the coating.

muriatic acid(10-20% HCl), about $5 a gallon at pool supply/hardware stores. it will take them out in 2 seconds. rinse down with a lot of water after. do it outdoors.

You are not trying to "neutralize" the galvanizing, you are trying to "pickle" or acid etch the coating to provide your paint a rough enough surface to adhere to. Vinegar is just a mild acid but as noted above, muriatic acid or a few others will work just as well. Make sure you rinse well with water to neutralize the acid when you are done though.

When you are rinsing off muriatic acid, I always like to use a baking soda/water mix. The baking soda will neutralize the muriatic acid, making it safe for the sewer and also provides some protection against the flash rusting that comes with using muriatic acid.

Pickling vinegar is 40% stronger than regular white vinegar. It's 7% as opposed to 5% acetic acid. You can find it in the canning and pickling supplies of your supermarket.

It is also an excellent herbicide. It's a fraction of the cost of anything in the garden department and is the same active ingredient as the products that have "Eco" or "Enviro" in their name.
