I ordered all the parts to do the timing chain on my wife's 2001 Hyundai Sonata last year and kept putting it off and it broke at 115,000 miles.
I have not started to see what damage has been done yet.

The worst part is that its my fault  for not getting at it sooner. The guy we got the car from said the belt in it was changed around 70,000 miles and about three years ago.

Never done a timing belt and I guess I will get experience in a little more than just the belt...

At least today it is warmer than it was Tuesday, I think I saw where it was down to freezing down your way! Good Luck with your new project!

2.4 or 2.5 liter? Those are interference fit engines. might as well just change it.. 10 yrs as a Hyundai tech tells me so.

is it a interference engine? if it is
I would pull a couple of the spark plugs before i even started.

if they look like this you might just want to pull the motor

these are from my 2002 kia rio when it threw the belt at 77k

On the flipside, I had an oil change coming up and decided to wait another week or two... then the head gasket turned loose. At least the oil change didn't go to waste!

More then likely bent valves. Probably cheaper to find a used motor. Then install your new timing belt on the used motor.

I work in the parts department at a Hyundai dealer here in Northern CA if you need help. Shipping will add up maybe to FL. There is All Hyundai/Izusu wreckers in Rancho Cordova just outside of Sacramento that you might check with :3gears:

Well I pulled the plugs.

#1 perfect
#3 perfect
#4 perfect

#2 looks just like yours. It really was the last one I pulled, thought I was going to get lucky. Guess not.

In the end I am thankful that it did not cause an accident and to have a backup vehicle so she has something to drive.

Timing belts at 60k? Wow, that would be an automatic no go for me. That is not a cheap maintenance item and the cost of a new belt every few years would enable an upgrade to a better platform with less maintenance. I guess I should be happy my TL is every 100k, still the $900 hurts...

Water pump may be sized.

Could be, I have a new water pump, timing belt, balance shaft belt, crank sensor, adjustors, acc drive belts and idler pulleys (all Auto7). If only I had not waited.

Chances are we will not repair it. Maybe part it out and junk whats left.

Kinda ***** because she LOVES the car. I liked that she liked it but it was not one of my favorite cars, not enough head room. Also if you touch any of the wiring connectors under the hood they crumble.

That is one reason I bought a Cruze with the 1.4L Turbo engine. It has a chain instead of a belt that is used in the base 1.8L engine.

thats what I did, but its hard to find those motors in a junk yard because they all look like this after they throw a timing belt:
DSCN4528_zps3fe9b3e6.jpg

Not sure how this could be broken belt, theres now way it would keep spinning long enough to do that much damage.
Now if someone replaced the belt wrong, and then drug it for 5 miles trying to get it started, that i could believe.

well i was going 55 when it started making all kinds of noise.
the motor had never been apart prior to this happening.

it is a 5 speed and i don't remember if i put the clutch in or not (its been 5 years), but i may not have which would have kept it spinning

60k timing belts are a pain in the ***. My jetta with a tdi has one but its only 140$ for the kit and the car maintains 50mpg so I live with it.

My father had his 1.8 VW engine rebuilt after he did the same thing. I'll stick to non-interference engines for myself :D

No such thing anymore. I have fixed allot of 1.8t due to them not making it to there 105 timing belt interval. I tell people to do them at 80k

The newer CR TDIs VW rates about 120k intervals. Had a 97 passat towed in yesterday with a broken belt. I opened the trunk and they had a belt in there. :banghead:

^ That engine looks like it was running lean for a while, and melting the pistons.:dunno: Ive seen a couple of interference timing belts that let go at low rpm, with little to no damage.

Use this database to locate an engine from a salvage yard:

http://www.car-part.com/

Transfer whatever you need to from the old acc drive, install your new parts on the salvage engine and keep the car on the road.

Tdi engines can go to 90 on the first gen motors in the mark 4 cars.

And 100k with the newer timing belts, but I have a mk3 unfortunately. Even though the car was my grandfathers and I changed the belt at 112k and it was never done. Its not worth the chance with all the work to fix a tdi after its lost the belt.

I forgot to post some pics. We have decided to not fix it and part it out on ebay.

So... if anyone needs any Hyundai Sonata parts let me know.
