My PoCo does not require load calcs. I removed the natural gas connection to my home and have gone 100% electric. I am also adding electric vehicle chargers and a workshop. I definitely need 200A service.

The home's load center is also being replaced with a 200A panel, so the existing panel is irrelevant now.

As RichieP noted, the near 90-degree angle of entrance is not ideal for a threaded bolt house knob, even if it technically meets code. Even if a through-bolt is not necessary, I think it is a good upgrade.

I don't want a mast through the rough for a number of reasons I won't go into here. The existing weatherhead location will be moved to near the peak of the roof, and the attachment point will be below that. There is plenty of height on the side of the house to accomplish this. I had a PoCo rep out a couple weeks ago and he confirmed.

I'm still looking for a good source for a through-bolt house knob. I checked out M&W's catalog that RichieP linked to, and I don't see that they make a through-bolt style. I have found a couple by Halex though:

2nd one with the insulator and buy a galvanized bolt to go with it. There are a few ways to do this as you don't want a roof penetration. I assume you have an attic. If you have cathedral ceilings be prepared for a roof penetration mast or opening up your wall to install a support from stud to stud for your through bolt. The simplest method requiring the least amount of skill is to:
- enter the attic and make sure you can access your gable end truss. If its fully accessible then good. You will be coming back later to mount a support for your through bolt.
- My guess is that your overall triplex height will now be at least two foot lower than previous. If this still meets your poco's overhead clearance requirement then continue.
- install your 200 amp meter and mast where you want, but following the guidelines as previously suggested. You have a window there to keep the proper clearance from.
- Next will be your penetration through the siding & sheathing into your attic space for the through bolt insulator combo. Remember this has to be approximately 12" lower than the service entrance head. Make sure you are also above the top plate of the wall, which it should be if you have moved closer to the peak. Drill through as close to the mast as practical. It doesn't matter if you don't hit anything solid on the gable end.
- Insert through bolt with insulator. Climb into the attic, if you went through a solid piece of gable end 2 x 4 then great put on your nut and tighten down. If not measure up & cut a 2 x 4 support to span across a solid section of the truss, put a hole in it where the through bolt goes in and fasten it in place with wood screws to the truss and not the sheathing.

Is there some reason why this would have to be done through the attic rather than attaching the house knob to the 2x4 rafter as it is currently done?

Welcome. The connection point of the triplex has to be lower than the service entrance head. Also some jurisdictions don't allow the screw in insulator. Your new triplex for the 200 amp service will also be heavier. Find someone young and flexible to climb up in the attic for you, you'll never have to worry about your fascia being torn off and your triplex falling down.
