The contractor started on my 24' x 24' shop on Friday. It will have 10' walls and a pitch of 4:12. I'm in Spokane Washington. I plan on going with close cell foam insulation with 2" in the walls and gables, and 3" under the roof deck. I have two estimates, one from a large company and one from a small company (owner and one other person).

Large insulation company
Roof deck and gable 3" $2800
Walls at 2" $2600
Total $5400 plus tax

Small company
Roof deck and gable 3" $2300
Walls at 2" $1850
Total $4150 plus tax

That is a $1250 price difference. Both state the same closed cell foam. Why would there be such a large price difference. Should I be cautious that the smaller company does a poorer job? Or does maybe the larger company has more overhead and travel distance? The larger company is located 60 miles away, say an hour and twenty minutes. The smaller company is about a 35 minutes away.

I like the idea of saving money, especially a grand. But I don't want to get a substandard job when it comes to my insulation. Thoughts? What would you do?

Does the smaller company have any reviews or word of mouth testimonials from some one you know? I was lucky when I had mine done that I knew the guy who owns the small company I had insulate mine, plus I talked to several people who had used his services. I am very happy.

Like Chuck said, go to the reviews. Look on Google, look on Facebook. Ask for references. I did the same in a 30x40x12 in Florida and had over $2k spread in prices, with the brick & mortar businesses consistently being more expensive. I ended up going with a company that I really only found represented on FB, based on the reviews I found there, and am generally very happy with the work they did. They also happened to be the cheapest by a solid $800, for 2" all the way around.

My opinion is that you need MORE quotes. Two is not nearly enough.
I'm a fan of foam.
I found several foam installers.
I got four quotes.
My plan got delayed almost a year so as I got back to it, I got quotes *again* from a couple of the same vendors and some new ones.
The quotes were greatly varied *even from the same guy*.
The market is very fluid and if they aren't at a busy time, they can get hungry.
If they are swamped, you'll pay more. research pays off.
In my case, I ended up with the BEST price from one of the BIGGEST companies.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the reviews and ask for references. I'll be sure to get a couple more quotes too.

I would calculate the actual square footage of the surfaces you are having quoted. It can give you good basis for comparing, and asking companies if they have a “rate”. Here in New England, the company I use will quote pretty much at a consistent rate of $1 per square foot per inch of thickness of closed cell foam.

The only other advice I can give you is to see one of their installs. The foam can be the same or similar product, same depth, but skill of the installer is a thing to avoid voids... Are you covering rafters / purlins?

I think you should be able to do better than "big company" prices.. At least you are around here, 25% difference, I'd believe it.

Thanks guys. I hope to see some examples of their work. Hopefully I'll have this wrapped up before the end of August.
