Hi, longtime lurker, thought I would post up some pics of the start of our new shop. Finally talked my wife into letting me build a shop, plus our current garage space is overflowing. Anyway, nothing special, 28'x36' stick frame, since we cannot build any metal buildings in our subdivision. Few points on our shop, going with gray vinyl, black 3 dimensional shingles, white metal ceiling, 9 T8 four bulb fixtures, 16'x10' and 10'x10' overhead doors, 12 foot ceilings, liftmaster openers, already ordered Legacy 6525MMA sealer, and had concrete poured 6" for future lift on 10'x10' overhead door side. Oh well, here are some pics of everything going together.

Before starting, going to the right and back about 85' of the house

Been a while since I've got to update anything. All my inspections passed, still have a lot to do inside, insulation, garage door openers, air line, wall covering. Finally got to put my floor sealer down so I can start moving stuff in, was very happy with the Legacy HD6525-MMA, went down good and was the look I was hoping for. Still need to move quite a bit in too, but weather has not been very co-operative, compressor, fridge, on and on. Really the last thing outside is my final grade so I can finally get my yard back and get some grass growing hopefully. Oh well, welcome to weather in KY. The bad thing is I keep on changing my mind and seeing other cool stuff every time I get on the board here! Love seeing the other awesome garages. On to some pics. Thanks, Bryan

Thanks guys.

Sean, I do plan to insulate it in the next couple of weeks, and I've already ran the wire I need to hopefully install a mini split system next year for heat and air.

C2 Turbo, we are around Elizabethtown area, about midway between Louisville and Bowling Green, you from KY area?

Thanks, Bryan

Believe me or not, I am also in Elizabethtown ;) I will shoot you my cell number as I would like to look at the floor in person.

I was looking at your pics and noticed right away one was taken on the town square in Hodgenville. As a kid I used to get my hair cut right beside Laha's. If you drive 31E to Bardstown, I grew up just a few miles from the Lincoln Boyhood Home.

Thanks guys, and no trees for me, I hate yard work and don't want to pick up or mow around anything I don't have to :D.

And W_KY, I get my hair cut down beside Laha's and still grab a burger there every once and a while.

Also just installed one of my Liftmaster 8500's today, went pretty smooth, took about 2-2 1/2 hours, but really like those openers.

Thanks, Bryan

That looks good man...did you put any grit in your clear on he floor.

Notgrownup, almost forgot, I didn't put any grit in the floor. I went back and forth, but a couple of guys I knew that did it said they wouldn't add the grit if they had to do over. They said the grit made it more difficult to clean and wash out. Thanks, Bryan

Great looking place, but would you be willing to flip the flag around? It's up there backwards.

From USHistory website on orientation of the flag:
8. When the flag is displayed in a manner other than by being flown from a staff, it should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left.

Thanks for posting your build! So many similarities to my build 30x36x12 (for which the materials were delivered yesterday... if I am lucky, it'll be stood up by Halloween).

I have also been planning to install white metal on the 12' ceiling and a densifier/sealer for the floor...

Did you put up (9) 4 bulb T8 fixtures? It looks like you have lots of light. Are you happy with the amount of light? Is the light good enough for detail work or do you think you need additional task lighting? Did you run the lights on separate circuits? if so, hows the light with say about half of them on?

Have you spilled anything on the densified/sealed floor? If you have, is it slippery without any additives/grit? I like how your floor looks and I've read that it's a good low maintenance solution for a working shop.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do for your walls. I'm contemplating a metal wainscot along the bottom (up to 48") and then sanded plywood, painted white above the wainscot (I hate finishing drywall...) I might even "back" the metal wainscot with some OSB or rough plywood for a tougher lower wall as I do not have the poured footer wall that you have.

BTW, the 2-door SS is really nice...

Thanks in advance.

kluge9,

I apologize for getting the flag backwards, I think it's the second time I've done that. Turned it around just now after I seen the post.

Thanks, Bryan

No worries. Just a peeve of a few of us. Not trying to detract from the great looking place you've got going on.

dhubbard,

I really like the lighting, very happy with the result. I just tried to do the lumens calculation I seen on some other posts I seen on the board and it came out pretty good I think. My plan is too build an overhead shelf along the back wall and I may add some task lighting so that when I'm welding I have a little bit better light over my workbench when I get it moved in. And I didn't put the lights on separate switches, I did that in my attached garage, and end up turning them all on anyway, so just put them all on same circuit.

I'm very happy with the floor, but I haven't really spilled anything in it yet to know how slippery it will be. What little I have, or my son has spilled, has wiped up with no problems.

Right now I'm thinking I will go with OSB walls. I was originally going to go with metal like the ceiling, but it's a little bit of a hassle to move electrical outlets if they don't line up with the ribs in the metal, and I don't want to even think about moving a lot of the outlets around now.

Thanks for the compliments on my SS car. It takes a very good picture, but up close it's a little rough. It looks like Stevie Wonder painted it at night in a dusty basement, but I really wouldn't change it. I've had nicer cars and was afraid to drive them much, we can drive this one anywhere.

Thanks, Bryan

Bryan,

Thanks for the reply.

The lighting calculators help, but it's hard to know how much lighting is enough, i.e. how many footcandles does one really need in a workshop? I've seen recommendations for a workshop from 40 - 80 footcandles (a pretty wide spread) and recommendations for fine detail work from 75 - 100.

It looks like you designed yours for about 60 footcandles - is that in the ballpark? It looks to be well lit.

Not knowing exactly where I want electrical outlets and air drops has made me hesitate to use ribbed metal walls, at least from top to bottom. My plan is to build in a "wire chase" for electrical and air; this was inspired by Modern Jess's Scooter Workshop build. If I do put some metal on the walls, to protect from welding splatter, etc, it'll be below the wire chase.

I don't know about any dusty basement paint job... your SS looks nice to me. It also has a nice stance.

Thanks again, looking forward to following your build!

Hey, it's been awhile since I've got to do any updates. It seems as soon as I was able to move some stuff in, I've been trying to get caught up on some side jobs. Still have plenty of things I want to get done to the shop, overhead shelf across the front, have some cabinets I need to move in, etc. I wouldn't change anything so far. The OSB walls painted pretty easily, and do what I need, also love the Liftmaster openers, and the Senville mini split system (one of the best things I put in, love walking out through a foot of snow, and taking my jacket off to work on everything). Here's a few pics of a shop that does get used, and how it looks today (needs a good cleaning with all this bad weather). Thanks, Bryan

Bryan, I live in Etown just outside Glendale. Think I've seen your car in town before. Nice garage.

Good to see some locals on here. I live out in the country between Custer and Irvington. I work in Elizabethtown.

Nice garage and cars.
