Hey guys-been following for years but now I’m finally building my own shop. It is a 40x50x16 concrete block building with a hip roof to match the house. I’m in Central Florida but not entirely sure I want to air condition the entire garage. We just started walls but I need to make a decision soon about a ceiling. Contractor is asking if I want to put up a 29ga metal ribbed ceiling with blown in cellulose above it. His point is it is easier to do now that later after we install the 2 overhead doors and lighting. Is it worth putting in a ceiling and insulation even if I don’t decide to air condition it? Wouldn’t it still help either way?

ceiling insulation will help immensely to reduce radiant heat from above . it will keep your space significantly cooler
Even if I don’t actually air condition the space? I posted this in a FB garage group and most seemed to think it was a waste of time and money if I wasn’t going to air condition it. I thought more like you said that it would still help the overall temp

Yes, by all means a ceiling with insulation will be well worth it even if you don’t install AC.

I’m just a little north of central FL and I have fully insulated 40x60 and in the heat of the summer my shop is significantly cooler than ambient even though I don’t have AC. 2024 will be my third summer in this shop and it will be air conditioned this summer.

This is good to hear. I already paid for the upgraded fully insulated overhead garage doors. I have decided what to do on the walls but that is something I can do on my own either way. I just didn’t want to decide to insulate the ceiling later and have to cut around all the garage brackets etc.

I know of too many instances of buildings with spray foamed roofs that had leaks and rotted out the rafters/decking to go that way. I love the idea of spray foam but I won’t do a roof in it. Plus the white ceiling will help with light reflection and just look cleaner than open rafters with spray foam.

Congrats on your new build! Good luck

Definitely insulate, energy is not going to get any cheaper. Would also consider using rockwool, if it's available in your area. Moisture doesn't affect it, and vermin don't like it. Plus as an added bonus it doesn't burn until it reachs it's melting temperature. (fire-resistant up to 2150 degrees Fahrenheit) For the future, you might also want to consider air conditioning using a mini split.

Proposed hip-roof framing is trusses, so that your supports for the 29 ga ceiling panels will already be there?

Yes-there will be 24” on center flat ceiling framing across the entire room. No framing will need to be added to support the panels
