Hello,
I have been lurking for awhile, I have asked a few questions and I am finally getting to build my Dream Shop. My wife and I bought a 110 acre piece of land to call our own. We are going to be building a new house and my 60'x140'x16' shop. We took ownership of the property this fall after the beans were harvested, unfortunately they were late beans and we did not get property until it was too late to start building a house so I get to start my barn instead. Here is the start of a long awaited dream. To have a nice shop to work on my equipment and also work on a few Hot Rods I have lying around. This was just bare land so we had to cut in the driveway to get started. The perfect spot for the house was a long ways for the road 1700' to be exact, but it provides us with enough slope for a walkout basement and a beautiful view of the woods and soon to be 2 acre pond. THis spot also made for a nice pad for the shop.

Here are a few pics of the driveway work...

Here are a few pics of my 22 month old giving me the final inspection of my work. She also makes a good mini excavator too, except for all the dirt she took home with her in her clothes, I heard about it from mom too!!

If you cant tell I am catching you up on the build. Here are a few pics of grading the top soil off for the pad for the barn, digging footers, pouring footers, setting forms for the pour.

Can't seem to keep the pics in order..... Anyways here is the next set of pics, forms stripped, perimeter walls insulated with 2" Foamular 150 and rough backfill w/ gravel and graded. Unfortunately we ran outta warm weather so we are going to have to wait to pour the floor after barn is up, darn Ohio winters.

Eric,
Yes it was definetly nicer weather on those days, alot colder than it looks in those pics, sun is misleading, plus there is always a breeze out there in the wide open field, but not nearly as cold as last week framing up the walls.

Drive way has a few soft spot that the concrete trucks worked up, there is plenty of mud to deal with, one advantage to the cold weather is when it all freezes over...

I'm way north of you, about an hour north of Columbus. I googled to find out where JR concrete was at. lol I thought if you were close I'd come and check it out. Your area looks the same as it does up here.

I'd assume you'll get some wind breaks planted soon. 110 acres, part of the family farm ?

Addition to the farm, went up for auction, they sold the house and barns seperate, but I didnt want them, needed alot of work. Its close to the home farm, wife and I wanted to start out new. Needed a new Maintenance shop anyways, tired of working on equipment in the storage building on gravel floors and poor lighting. So this is where ended up, long road to tow, but will be great in the long run.

tough row to hoe idiom Also, hard row to hoe. A difficult course, hard work to accomplish, as in He knew he'd have a tough row to hoe by running against this popular incumbent. [First half of 1800s]

The L shaped area on the corner is a office area/ breakroom. There will be a bathroom also, hate having to run in the house when your working on equipment and all greasy (wife hates it the most).

Since I dont have anymore pics to down load at this time guess I could give you all a bit of an overview of where the project is headed.
Its a 60'x140'x16' with an L shaped office on the corner. The main building will be split in two sections, Main heated shop area being 60'x80', 60'x60' Equipment storage.
Whole barn is getting spray urethane foam in the walls, ceiling will be cellulose, I am alos lining the interior with metal liner panel.
I am putting hydronic radiant heat in the floor, 3 zones, I am not planning on heating the 60'x60' right now, but I am putting the tube in for future use. 60'x80' and office area will be heated. 2" Foamular150 on foundation wall, 2" Foamular250 under floor, 6mil. vapor barrier under that. 6 gauge heavy wire mesh, 1/2" pex tied to that and then 6" of concrete to top it off. Plan on heating with a Maxim 250 outdoor corn boiler (have plenty of corn)!
60'x80' has 3 overhead doors, a 20'x14' and 2- 12'x12', 60'x60' has a 24'x14'. There are 7 3'x4' awning windows in the main shop area, and 6 in the office area.
Floor in the office area is going to be a colored antique concrete, with a sealer, so its easy to broom and mop when needed, plus it will classy it up a bit. This area will be a place to hang out with few buddies and have a beer frig.

I would show you a print but it is just a pencil sketch of what I wanted, nothing to fancy. Once it starts to come together the pics will make sense.

One of the first new tools to get put in this shop is a 10-12,000# 2 post lift. No more changing clutches lying on my back...LOL This is the one thing I have looked forward to the most. I want a plasma cutter also, but probably wont be right away, torch still gets done what is needed, just a bit more grinding.

Very nice building!! I'll have to keep an eye on this.

Just a couple of observations.

As long as you're building it that big, I would suggest taller overhead doors. I went with a 24' X 14 1/2', and it's no more than enough height for the sprayer. We all know that the equipment won't get any smaller. I would also think a wider one would be advantageous for you also. Dualed combines & 4wd tractors w/800's will be tight in a 20' door. I don't see much reason to go over 24'. Price jumps a lot, and you can still get the 30' plus heads in while on the trailer.

Why not spray foam insulation on the roof also? I'm so glad that I did the whole building that way. Sealed up tight, and no obstructions if I have to do anything above the ceiling.

You will definitely enjoy the lift. One of the most used features of our shop, in the short time we've had it.

Have you considered in-floor anchors? As for now, I haven't needed them, but I have 4, just in case.

I buried the post for a jib crane. I didn't care for the massive bolt-down baseplates. This is one thing that everyone tells me that I'll use more than I can imagine. I just wish that I could get it finished. Not in the funding right now.

Will you have a door between the shop & cold storage? This would be nice for moving things around in the dead of the winter.

Please keep us up to speed on the progress, and Good Luck!!

Zeebad,

Sorry couldnt get quotes to work for me. I have 14' tall doors now everything fits, guess didnt think things were growing up as much as out. I do plan on a 24' wide door between shop and cold storage, if it wouldnt go thru 20' wide I can still bring it around. Everything fits thru 20' now.

I am putting 8 anchor points in one of the bays, always wanted this.

I would also like to see your pics of tube for jib, I want to do the same thing, I am hoping to find a used one before I get floor poured in spring, have a few auctions to go to. Would appreciate pics if you have any?

I was priced with cellulose in ceiling, I am wanting to spray it with foam also, at least a couple of inches, maybe add cellulose if need higher R-value? I have not wanted to bother since its the holidays, plus they cant spray in this cold of weather, so I have time. i like hearing you are glad you did it, I want to but money is in short supply, still probably splurge on insulation and wait on something else.

Thank you, for suggestions, I have thought this thing to death, but sometimes you get blindside by certain ideas and cant see past them. I am open for any other ideas you or anyone might have. Its a once in a lifetime deal, needs to work for me, not against me.

Thanks again!!

You're welcome!! I know exactly what you're going through. Same as you, we're only doing this once, so we really "let it roll!"

I've had the opportunity to visit many shops in the past, and have always looked at, and asked a lot of questions.

I learned a lot of "must have" suggestions, and more importantly, the "don't do" things.

Here's a look at ours, but just remember, it's not a "farm" shop. :)

It looks farther along with todays pictures than last night. I would hate to be framing this thing in the winter, brrrrr, but I understand it's generally the slow time on the farm.

Are you sticking a shower in the shop bathroom?

It was a long year, slow getting corn off this year. So getting a late start has been inevitable, but we are getting it done, just need to dress for it....LOL I dont mind the cold, biggest pain in the a$$ is wearing gloves and handling nails. Once we get it closed in then it wont be as bad, less wind to deal with.
Unfortunetaly not getting the floor poured is going to put me way behind because I cant build some of the interior walls needed, and wont be able to spray the urethane foam in the cold weather, so yes there are disadvantages to doing it this time of the year, but its when I have time to do it.

Yes there is going to be a shower in the shop bathroom, also a washer and dryer to wash shop clothes, shop rags and such. My wife keeps a clean house and this will make it easier on her which in turn makes it easier on me....LOL

Its nice to see a fellow Ohioan fulfilling his dreams.
I'll be staying tune.

Question: How does the three tubes under the driveway come in to play? Where are you located in Ohio?

The 3 tubes are ina waterway located in the field, it does not have running water like a stream, but there is 400+ acres higher than me that has to drain thru my property in times of heavy rain, so soil and conservation recommended this setup of 3- 24" tile. It also helped level out my drive, I didnt have such a dip in the drive to drive thru, looks much better this way.

Hope that answered your question?

Well we are not off to a good start for tomorrow, it has snowed pretty steady since this afternoon, doesnt look to good for setting trusses as planned, oh well thats the joy of Ohio weather. Dont fear we will strive to move forward and I will post more as it comes available.

What I would like to see and hear about are some of the things that others have done to or put in there shop that you never regreted as well as things that you wished you would have done? I have been searching thru older post looking for some of these great ideas.

Drove by the site yesterday and progress is being made. Rafters were all up, roof sheeted, and tar papered.

It's looking good!

Well weather has been better lately, so we are getting more done on the Shop. We had about 1/3 of the trusses up before New Years, then it was really cold for a week, so nothing was happening, last week and this week have been much nicer temp wise so things are coming together.
