I had been using an old 3M Speedglas 9000x that was working fine but getting pretty beat up. A really nice lady welder I know that works in a large production facility asked me if I wanted a welding helmet. She said they were upgrading safety equipment at work and they were issued new gear and told to toss the "old" stuff in the dumpster. She brought home 2 and offered me one of them for free!
Best part (no, maybe FREE is the best part) is it is a BRAND NEW as in UNUSED Speedglas 9002x with flip front grinding feature and she gave me a big handful of spare lens covers and batteries! The digital controls are nicer than my old helmet. same light weight and comfortable headgear.
Not a bad day for me! I came home all giddy and my wife thought I was acting too excited until I told her its a $500 helmet.
:rocker:
Now I gotta think of something nice I can do for the giver in return.

If you don't know the answer to this, I am sure someone on here will fill you in shortly.....:pimpflash

Her husband is a big burly tatooed biker. I've known them both for years. It would have to be something that he would approve of.
I was thinking of picking up a couple nice steaks for them to grill.

OK, Ill admit I ****. especially after you hear the rest of the story.
After I inherited a Oxy/Avetylene torch set and a stick welder last year, I started building up my equipment for my home hobby shop. My wife had a minor fit about the cost of the "free" welding equipment after I bought a few clamps and supplies and had the tanks refilled and hydro tested so I set out to get everything else for the least amount of money.
I got permission to scrounge a scrap yard with 18 old military trucks that were some kind of mobile machine shops. From them I salvaged a brand new Wilton 5" C-0 bullet vise, an unused double end 6" Wissota grinder, and a phoenix welding rod (50#) oven along with some steel and 40 pounds of welding rod in sealed tins. Total cost= 1 bag of homemade deer sausage.
I traded an 80,000 btu Lenox hanging gas heater (that didn't cost me anything) for a Lincoln 135 Pro Mig even up but I had to put $36 worth of parts into it (broken guage and burned polarity lugs. I just might be the King of Cheap
