I just picked up my first classic car. It is a 1968 Camaro, RS-style hidden lights, 350, Edelbrock 4-barrel carb, Muncie 4-speed manual, heat/air conditioning

I want the car to be a reliable cruiser, not a race car. So far, I reconfigured the front seat belts, installed 3-point rear belts, installed a back seat, changed a bad battery terminal, and washed it. It looks like it may have a small radiator leak and small leak in the rear main seal.

I am not a mechanic by any means, but I look forward to working on car with my gearhead 6-year old son.

Very nice, I like the look of 67-68 better than the 69's. Enjoy working on it with your son as those will be days he will cherish.

NICE! I love the look of the hidden lights and all grill look on the RS.
Are they pneumatic actuated still?
I not loving the bright steering wheel but by no means would it be a deal breaker for me either.
I would look into getting some RS emblems for it, see.... http://www.camarocentral.com/CAMARO_EMBLEM_KITS_s/206.htm
So, what are your plans for it?
Weekend warrior around town, show it a car shows, or are you gonna be the new conservator?
Sounds like something to be handed down to your son....just don't give it to him in 10 years when he gets his licence...wait for about 30 years!!!!
Good find...it's a keeper!

Ohhhhhhhh Crawl Awah, I don't blame you one bit for snagging that up! :D Beautiful ride for sure.

You can try laying a piece of cardboard underneath its parking spot to pinpoint the leak. Though I'm kind of a Mopar fan, my man is affectionately known as Bowtie Billy and there's quite a few of them around my place. If you end up tearing into the motor, you might consider a 1-piece oil pan gasket; they're a bit more expensive but pay for themselves in ease of installation (and elimination of rear main leaks).

Enjoy that fine ride and keep us posted on your mods and smiles per gallon! I admire you for getting your son involved -- Young Guns are the future of our hobby.

Thank you. The doors are electric now. I don't love the color of the steering wheel, but it is very nice. I am looking for the right emblem. I would like something small and simple, something like a period correct bow tie. I don't really have plans. I will probably drive it on my 70 mile round trip to work once a week and around town on the weekends. I may participate in some local car shows, but it is really for my son and I to bond over and enjoy.

Thanks all. I am really happy with the car. My original 1968 license plates showed up today, so I get to re-register the car to the original plates. The plates are NOS from 1968.

Very nice...I am now jealous of you sir.

What did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

Tyler

Let's just say, I literally handed the guy a large envelope stuffed with cash. . .

I am sure that the leak is from the radiator itself. The drips are coming from it and the pump and hoses are dry. I will look into the one piece seal.

I had one of those with a 396 for about 3 days. Had to flip it real quick before the parents got home.

Real nice.

Very nice! A black 68 RS has been one of my dream cars for quite some time. What part of DFW are you in? I didn't notice it until I read that you commute 70 miles round trip. I thought I was one of the few crazies that did that. Then I saw DFW and it made sense.

I'm in Melissa, just north of Mckinney, but I commute to north Dallas at 635/DNT intersection. I'm curious where you found the car. My daughters are too young right now to help with a project car, but I would love to get a head start!

Craigslist. There is a place in Blue Ridge called Atlas Muscle cars. I got the feeling that they kind of throw their cars together, though.
