New Age Bold good enough?

I'm heavily leaning toward getting a set of Bold cabinets instead of the Pro ones. That's mainly because my garage is stupidly short front to back - if I park my TL in front of the curbside trash can, I've got about 4" left over - and the Bold series is half a foot shallower on the ground cabinets which will help with room.

I've already got a Masterforce rolling cabinet which will still be doing most of the heavy lifting as far as storage. The cabinets will be holding stuff like spray paint, woodworking hand tools, various chemicals, and service manuals - generally light stuff. I'm only getting the cabinet to eliminate having to store all that stuff on shelves where it keeps getting knocked off. Based on that I'm not gonna regret not going with the 18g am I? I would really like to save the room unless they'd just ****.

I'm in the same boat as you right now working with a small garage constraint. It seems that all 18ga base cabinets out there are 24" deep and if you need something smaller you have to settle for lighter weight construction. The only 18" cabinet I have found in a heavy build is the Gladiator ones. Right now I am on the fence between the Gladiator and Newage Bold for my garage. I wish there was a another option out there for 18 to 20ga shallow steel cabinets.

Well, I *could* fit the Pro in there, but it would end up being a tight squeeze. I've seen the Pro at a friend's house, and am mainly wondering if the Bold will sacrifice too much. Is the locker cabinet door gonna be really floppy and cheap-feeling or is it properly braced, that kinda stuff.

I also kinda paused at the "most cabinets are welded and fully assembled" line on their website.. OK, which ones aren't?

I have to admit the $1300 12-piece Bold set at Costco is awfully tempting as long as it's not gonna be some dicey, cheap POS. It won't be abused, but I also don't want it denting if I breathe too hard on it.

I had the same concern and pulled the trigger on a Bold 10 piece set recently. Should be delivered sometime this week. I am mainly using the set to store basic home garage stuff. I already have 2 other tool chests for heavy tools.

Are you talking about the Gladiator cabinets? If so then all of the ones called "premiere" are fully welded. The others are marked as RTA (ready to assemble). I have seen both products in person (the wall cabinets only) and the the RTA version is not very impressive while the "Premiere" 20ga version appeared to be more than adequate for what your described use would be. I just wish the Gladiator cabinets looked as nice (cosmetically) as the Newage cabinets but that is completely subjective.

No, the New Age Bold. I looked at Gladiator. I just can't get past the diamondplate. Maybe I'm weird but I just don't care for large expanses of the stuff.

New Age's website lists the pro as "fully welded," and the Bold as "most cabinets are fully welded." As the Costco ones come fully assembled I suspect all the ones I care about are welded, but wouldn't mind some confirmation on that.

I see what you are talking about now. The only non fully welded cabinet is the 48" locker that they offer in the Bold line. It requires some assembly. I assume that it was too large to make shipping practical? The balance of their line should be fully welded.

I have some of the new age bold stuff and really like it. I think one big thing you have to plan is what you are going to be doing with them. I got mine on sale so it was well worth the price.

Are you planning on securing the cabinets to the wall? Im also assuming everything will be bolted together as a set?

I have 2 sets of performance plus in my garage (24" depth). The full height cabinets were kind of flimsy standalone (not surprised with how big they are). After everything was lagged to the garage wall and bolted together, the set is very rigid. I am not worried about it in the slightest.

Granted the bold series is different, if you plan on tieing everything into the wall, I would have zero concerns with the 18ga.

Honestly, I would be more concerned about shipping. I have read many horror stories about shipping damage with Newage. I asked for additional packing materials (I had to get it all the way to Alaska) when I ordered mine straight from Newage and everything arrived without damage.

Everything but the bottom cabinets, yes - I want to be able to move the bottoms for easier spring cleaning. But the full height cabs and (obviously) the uppers will be secured to the wall.

>Honestly, I would be more concerned about shipping.

Yeah, I've seen that as well. I'm not overly concerned just because every review I've read that mentions shipping damage has said that Newage makes it right with no hassle at all -- and since I'm getting it through Costco, even if Newage didn't, Costco would.

I appreciate all the responses so far - It's making me feel pretty good about the choice to go with the lighter stuff.

I have the Bold series in my garage and really like them - but I am not "abusing" them either.... fully functional shop (at home) so I store some big and heavy stuff. I DO have 1 cabinet that is the next step up (LONG story about that one.....). I wouldn't worry about damage unless you are getting single cabinets shipped - part of the long story mentioned earlier. If you get them as a set, they put them on pallets, put the smaller stuff inside the larger stuff and shrink wrap them all together.

NewAge used to sell a ready to assemble bold cabinet line, but not any more.
There are a lot of reviews right here on Garage Journal. Just enter NewAge in the search window. Here's one right here.

With all the garage problems I read about here I am glad a contractor never laid a hand on my house garage or my detached garage. If I have a problem with either of them I only have myself to blame. Lol

Thanks again everyone for the advice. Ended up going with the Bold. Got them installed yesterday and they look great! I ended up bolting everything to the wall including the bottom cabinets just to give it more stability. I can tell I'm definitely not going to regret going with the lighter steel - for what I'm doing with it these are more than sturdy enough.

About the only thing I would change on them would be better side bracing on the floor cabinets - the walls are flexible enough that they can bow a little bit after you bolt the cabinets to each other, which required some futzing around to make the slides work right. But once I got that squared away everything else went in really easily. Already had several neighbors stop in to admire the cabinets and the new floor, so it was a good weekend!

Yep, I'll do that tonight - didn't finish installing them until late last night and decided to do pics when there was more light coming in (haven't installed new lighting yet).

Everything's still a total mess because I haven't finished putting things away from the storage cube they were in while the floor got done, but there it is.

I have a bold 10pc set and I'm very happy with it.. they're loaded right up and can handle a ton of weight. I do anything from working on lawn equipment, to woodworking and they have been great, I still put a rubber work mat down for heavy or sharp objects.. I still like the tops looking nice!. The price was right and they've served my needs no problem.

That looks very close to what I got - you even laid out your base cabinets the same. I bet the extra room using base cabinets as wall cabs is nice.

Yeah, I'm being very nice to the counter top because it's a very nice looking one. I'm actually planning to build a fold-down workbench for the "real" work.

My only complaint on the cabinets so far is that the double-sided mounting tape they include for the light kit is completely inadequate. I come out in the morning and find at least one light hanging by its cord. I'll run to a parts store and get automotive mounting tape to replace it this weekend.

Yeah I did that specifically to get the most workspace possible, its definitely made a difference. I didn't use the lighting kit from Newage, that is an actual dual bulb 4ft T8 fixture from home depot that I made custom to fit underneath the upper cabinets along with a valance to direct the light downwards.

Zero shadows while I work, and its hard wired to a double stacker switch from Leviton so I can have both my bench and ceiling lights on or off at the same time or separately.49807aa38abdb59c5b37ada86daa2f35.jpg
