New air compressor motor

I need a new electric motor for my Craftsman air compressor. I bought one already but quickly learned it was not the hp they said it was. Where are you guys finding replacement motors from? I have checked Grainger but I'm not spending 5-700 dollars when a new compressor is 1k.

I need a 3.2hp/7hp peak 240 volt single phase motor. It draws 14 amps or around 3,360 watts.

My new compressor motor crapped out on me three years ago at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on Thanksgiving Eve. I ran to Harbor Freight and bought a new motor to get me by for the long weekend and it's still running strong. I do have a new replacement warranty motor in the box, but I'm not sure I'll ever need it.

A 3 HP 240 volt single phase motor is going to be closer to 17 amps. I bet your compressor uses the same SPL motor that mine does.

The 7HP peak rating is pure BS...

14a FLA is about right for a 3HP motor as the FLC rating is 17a...

What pump does your compressor have? If it is a brand you can find some specs for, then you can buy the 3/5/7.5 motor you like and simply change the motor pulley to the right size for the h.p.

Be sure you get a motor with the same rating and speed (same ballpark RPMs)

If your current motor is a 4 pole / 1750-ish RPM, you can't use a 2 Pole 3450-ish RPM.

Faster motors are smaller/cheaper for the same HP, but they won't work (at least not without pulley changes that are generally not worthwhile).

If you get a motor with the same frame size you get:

Same shaft diameter
Same shaft Height
Same hold-down bolt pattern

Otherwise check those things separately.

I have found that buying cheap motors generally costs more time and money than you would have to spend on good motors.

How sure are you the original motor is unrepairable?

Unless the winding are burned, the motor is most likely repairable.
