Mikes Audi Garage

Hey there guys.... I have been looking around for a bit but decided to post my first question since I have been looking and looking and not finding what I need.

I came from a 2 car that was this:

To a new house and an extra wide 3 car that is this:

So I can do more of this:

Anyway I will end up using epoxy on the floor or using tiles (not sure yet). My goal is to make it more "lab-like" and minimalist. I used to like having my tools out on the pegboard but im not feeling it this time around. I want to get a couple nice mid rise toolboxes and I am throwing around the idea of building the workbench between the two bays going from the garage doors to the house wall rather than up against it but still leaving room to get around it. This would allow me to have one bay dedicated to working on a car and the other two for parking and such. This is where I need help.... I cant find any nice ideas for the workbench how I am thinking.... I have searched a million ways and nothing. Anyone have any thoughts or pics? Pros and cons?

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Welcome to Garage Journal!

Have you checked out the 12 Guage Garage? It's what I'm picturing you wanting.
http://12-gaugegarage.com/index.html

One of the best uses of space I have ever seen.... The 12 Guage has been on of my favorites for a long time.

Thanks for the welcome guys.... I think I know what I am going to do and although I didnt want to do pegboard I am thinking I may have to so I can get the space I want out of the garage and not have to put in another toolbox.

Well its been a while lol and I have been working on the house so much that the garage was left behind a bit. I set up a little operation in the 3rd bay to work on my B2 but I found it to be to in the way so I finally built a workbench.

Here is what I had temporarily....

I ended up removing the small bench I built and then got to work on this one....

Used an ebony stain and paint for the surface....

Added some shelves and then used some paint i had left over from the kids room to paint my cabinet and the shelf....

Added some more shelves just to the right of this pic and had a decent amount of room at this point....

I still have a long way to go but now it is so much better working on the 20vt with things organized once more. I still need to decide on a flooring and get some paint on the walls. The people that did the drywall in the garage were not the best at it so I may be re taping some areas.

JT: i know you probably started this intro thread last year, but i might have a solution for your bench. i have a small shop so not enough room for a 4 x 8 layout table or a nice table saw and huge table around it so i saw this on GJ just before you joined that i think you might like. i'm planning on building two of these steel all purpose tables about 2 x 5's and the link to the thread i'm working on slowly is in my sig line.

another new member made these cool nesting workbenches and the only thing i might change is to give them an adjustable feature so i could make all three the same height if i needed a big surface to work on. here's the link to Cubby Chowder's thread which i think you might enjoy reading and you can see more pictures of the nesting tables and hear why he built them.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272772

since you have the front end off your car i bet you could make either one of these workbenches or something close if they might work for you.

any questions on how to use the site just ask and one of us will try to help if we can.

I finished the red 4000 years ago.... It was a complete rebuild.... I had the front off in that pic to clean it up and I was doing some suspension work. I am currently working on the 200 20v turbo now. I do need an old vice for sure.

JT: I've helped a lot of old and new members get a better vise on their workbench. sometimes shipping costs won't allow for a decent deal to be passed on, but I've shipped several and buyer still happy. some are farm or warehouse fresh so you can restore yourself or i'm getting ready to spiff a few up for those that have better things to do or can't.

one other thing you might do is put your location in your profile either an area or city and state so we know what part of the world you live in.

sounds like you know your way around a car's parts and happy to hear the red one is up and running.

Happy Easter

I scored some lockers from work. I wasnt thinking they would work as good as they did and when I realized that they could be broken up I was happy with the result.

I got four of these units and gave two of them to a buddy for helping me pick them up.

I used them as overhead cabs and created a shelf at the end.

I also added some lights for the work area.

As it sits now....

I created a little computer area at the right but now the goal is to get the white Audi 20v back together and out of the garage and then start working on the new bench/work area to the side. This will most likely be the spot I move the drill press, grinder and compressor to and then create a new desk area where the drill and grinder were at. Its coming together and it is SO much easier to work on my cars again. I still have to figure out the floor and paint. Also I want to add the new breaker and outlets when I get the other side situated.

JT: nice find on those lockers and i'd buy some that looked that good too if they came up for sale near me. even better way to hang them so you can use them. i like your bench and your organized work area. keep up the great work and i'm sure that old car will be out of way in no time.

good luck
