Impalajon's New Barn and Shop

Greetings all. I posted a question late last year in the general discussion section regarding whether I could expect costs savings building and barn and shop at the same time. The consensus from several experienced members was that there were little savings in material and labor, but there might be opportunities when it came to delivery of concrete, and the use of other tools/machinery.

I purchased the materials for both buildings in February as part of the lumber company’s winter sale. In addition to the discounted price, I received free delivery when I was ready to build.

Original plan was to do all the excavation for both sites at the same time then build the barn, then the shop several weeks later. After delays by the excavator totaling nearly a month, I went ahead and scheduled both buildings back to back to avoid getting bumped to the end of the summer in my builder’s schedule.

Excavation started early last week and was complete in three days. Barn is going up first but is going slow due to the weather. Pictures to follow.

Barn: 36x84 with 12x60 loft
Shop: 32x48x14 with 32 x 24 lean-to over an existing pad

32x48 Shop is going in front of an existing 36x24 pad. The existing pad is probably 15-20 years old and wasn't in the greatest shape and wouldn't have been suitable as the floor for the building. I'm putting a 32x24 lean to roof on the backside of the building over the pad for additional covered storage.

This site wasn't as level as I thought, it took 240 tons of material to level and raise it. Found out the existing pad wasn't level, which helped cause the illusion.

Snapped this picture last night and sent to my Daughter. She said with all the rain we've been getting it looks like we're building an Ark. Builders should be back at it today.

Shop materials started arriving last week, three different deliveries so far. Awesome truck with the remote control boom for unloading. He was able to swing the load through the trees and into position with very little effort.

Second guy chose to leave his truck on the road and drive the materials up the the steep driveway with his forklift. Took quite a bit of effort to swing his load through those trees.

The 12" of fill for the barn will be a great investment down the road. Nothing worse than a wet ground in a barn. Yes, they are horses, but bad for them to stand in the wet like that. Even better for your wife cleaning the stalls.

Look great, like the land and layout.

Wooster OH,
Weather finally cleared and the roof is on. A little rain this morning but at least they can work on the loft under cover. I'm hoping they're done by the end of the week, I have a truckload of hay scheduled to arrive Saturday and if my loft isn't ready I'll have to store at my rented barn at the county fairgrounds about 25 miles away. I certainly don't want to handle that hay twice.

Wooster OH,
Serious progress yesterday. They stopped working on the loft and focused on the exterior which should be done by noon today. They plan to start setting poles for the shop this afternoon and finish the loft tomorrow since there's another chance of rain. Looks like doing both buildings together has provided some flexibility.

Wooster OH,
As expected, the exterior of the barn was finished about noon yesterday and they moved over to the Shop where they got all the posts set by the end of the day.

They had to cut pieces out of the existing pad to set the poles on the back side of the lean-to. I should have specified 25' wide instead of 24' for the lean-to so the posts could clear the concrete, but this might work out better anyway. By the time I add insulation and concrete, the shop floor will be about 1' higher than the existing lean-to pad. I have a man door straight from the shop to the lean-to where I'll need a step.

Seeing the Bobcat parked makes me think the lean-to area will work great for parking the tractor and implements so they aren't taking up valuable space in the shop. Yes, that's a guy standing up there with a chain saw cutting the top of the post. :shocking:

Pics of the finished exterior of the barn and progress on the loft will be coming later.
