That'd be awesome! Only loses 1% after 1000 charges. I wonder how much that will set you back though!

That article is seriously short on details. I hate to be a pessimist, but throw in equal parts of engineer's pipe dreams, marketer's BS and "all problems with flow batteries solved in one giant leap" and you get something that's just too good to be true.

I'll be the wet blanket...

I was watching a program on these the other night with the Mrs. They are neither compact nor maintenance free. Definitely for large scale industrial settings only:

Pbs did a show on new battery tech. There is some very good batteries that will be coming out in the next few years.

another "new" technology that is 100% based on the existing 100 year old stuff.

This same headline/show was presented 30 years ago, and 10 years ago. As the oldWizard says a long walk and $$$$$$$$ from lab to production.

I saw that trailer sized flow battery on Nova the other night. They also showed a lab sized benchtop one.

I cannot imagine flow batteries used in portable devices (even as large as an electric vehicle), but they have the potential to make wind and solar more grid friendly, in places where pumping water doesn't make sense.
