Where to begin?

I have a finished building, but totally empty. Never had a garage before and unsure of what I need to do first.

I will be setting up my wood shop first so I can do any building necessary for stuff...but that is the easy part for me.

Basic layout is a large 2-bay measuring out about 30x32 with full electric (200 amp service with 5 legs of 220) and water. Insulated with central heat and air already. Two additional rooms that will be used for wood shop and hangout area. Also have wrap-around covered area outside on concrete.

I am in the process of upgrading my toolbox to something larger since I outgrew what I have now years ago. Large rollaround? or something in a fixed location?
Workbench area?
Cabinets?

What are you going to use it for? That should dictate what you need. Are you organized and tidy or really disorganized and messy? That can dictate how much storage you need, and how organized you need to be. I know for myself, if I allow too much counter space, I will never clean up and it will be a mess, so I am designing less counter space and more storage space into my shop.

Obviously take a look around here, there are TONS of great solutions.

A ventilated but sound isolated room (closet) for a big compressor. A stripper pole for the hangout??? area.

I like to maintain my motorcycles and vehicles. Nothing too dramatic I guess. I am very organized and like to keep things in their place (24 yrs of military will do that).

I figure this thing will evolve as I go since I am not sure how I will actually use the garage. Never had one...so who knows.

I am checking out pics on here and there are some wicked garages here.

If you are into organization and efficient use if space then you need to check out Jack Olsen's 12 Gauge Garage in the galleries area.

There's your answer. Check back with this site to see how others have solved problems as you run into them.

This site has me on my third go-round of setting up my garage, and it's not my first rodeo with setting up a garage. No more changes after this one though.

You built it too small, make it bigger!

1500 sq ft of building with three interior sections and a covered area outside too small? Heck, I'm in heaven with never having any sort of garage before. I have more room than I know what to do with.

One thing that has always bugged me with carport work areas, is that I have to get everything out to use, set it up, and put it all away each day I want to use it...leaving it out and unsecured was not an option. I can't wait to just have everything already in the work area all the time and being able to drop whatever I'm doing as is...and pick up again the next day without the hassle of putting it all up. When project is done, put it all away and clean up.

Hate having toolbox in the house closet or shed out back...talk about a hassle.:(

If you snap some pictures, we might be able to make some suggestions based on what we see.

It sounds like a great size -- although trust me, you'll eventually fill it up. :)

I'll get some next week with the doors wide open and lights on. Any ideas on layout and such will be most helpful. Good idea Jack.

When ya get a full size compressor I'd probably put it out back under the covered part & plumb it through the wall.

Going to be doing any welding?

That'd be very easy as there is a 220 line already pulled into an outside wall.
