So I have moved and am starting my new shop. Its 30 X 84. The first 24 feet will be workshop, the next 12 will be machine shop area and the last 50 feet will be storage. Following the advice on this forum, I went with 6" concrete for a later life and 12' ceilings.

It will have 5 10' X 10' insulated doors and one 36" walk through door.

My questions is, the rafters are on three foot centers. I would like to sheetrock the first 36 feet and thought it would be better if I ran furring strips across the rafters rather than try to span the 34.5" gap. What size should the furring strips be and what spacing should they be, 16", 24"?

You could run metal on the ceiling. Hang visqueen from the rafters, put up the metal, then blow in insulation through a few strategically placed access holes. The metal spans 8' between trusses in my shop.

The area is really big and the space around is beautiful. One of friend is having similar structure, a utility carports in Florida and is planning to convert it into a small garage based shop. I feel this will require a great investment of time, expenses and planning.

So the building is complete on the outside and has passed final inspection. Now to build out the inside and get some lights working.
