Finally after 5 years I am building a shop for my car hobby. I wanted to get some input on lighting and lift placement.

Here are the details:
  • 42x35x10 with 4/12 peak height 15.8'
  • Metal weld-up building clear span
  • 3" insulation vinyl backed
  • Slab is 5.5" thick 3000psi concrete with perimeter beams and cross beams 18" deep
  • Two 16x8 residential panel doors-manual lift for now
  • Two lifts-4 post for storage and 2 post for work
  • Primary use storage and work on hobby cars
  • 100amp service
  • Lighting-t5 8' strips.
  • No indoor bathroom. Building will have water outside
  • There will be approximately 3-5 cars in this building at any given time
  • Eventually I will install a mini split to keep from burning up in the summer. It may be sooner than later given we are in May.

What do you think of the lift placement?

Thoughts on lighting layout?
Thoughts on electrical layout. Keep in mind this is to get started. I plan on having hose reels for drops for compressed air.

4 post-I want room to get to storage shelves and store larger parts. Looking at Atlas lift as this will mostly for storage of a sub 3000# car.
2 post-I originally had it at the back but moved it forward as I plan on having a ground up project towards the back. This will allow me easier access to the lift. I am looking at either an Atlas, Bendpak, and Rotary revolution lift (all 10k capacity, 220v).

I have allowed space for a temporary engine building room (pvc tent).
The compressor will be outside or in another storage building immediately next to the garage where media blasting will be done.

I have more questions than answers.
I think you would be happier with at least an 18 wide door on the 2 post side.

Do you know what the shear wall requirements are for your area?

What's your ceiling height? Maybe doors taller than 8' of a high lift to get more room fot your lift. You can take your door height in 3" increments if so desired.

I tend to agree with having the hoist side by side. I would then go with a 20' and then maybe a 14' wide door.

Will your 4 post be 220v? If so you'll need a drop for it.

Thanks for the feedback. The left wall will be 30' of storage shelving. I have a lot of parts to store. I spoke with a friend that has a 4 posts and he said having the lift in a place where you cannot access parts and storage is problematic which is why I moved it over to the right. Btw, the lift will be 110v. i will not be using it much as it is for storage.

I do not know what the shear wall requirements if any. The plans were designed by an engineer and approved by the city. The requirements for wind load and snow load are minimal in my area.

The lowest ceiling height at the eve is 10' then it rises 4" for every foot upto the center line. Total ceiling height is a little more than 15' at center.

I looked at every door option I could think of and decided to be conservative on the doors. The building guys say they need 2' above the door and I did not want the building to look like a warehouse with 12' or 14' walls so I went with 10' walls and same pitch as the house, thus the 8' high doors. The doors are pretty much fixed at the current size.

I thought I would update the thread with the photos of how the shop is ending up.

I had some issues with contractors, but it is working out. All I can say for that is make sure you have as much in the agreement as you can even down to lien waiver requirements.

I managed to get the 4 post lift and the two post lift moved to the shop by myself. That was a good test of problem solving to not get hurt and not damage the equipment given I have never done that before.

Next is to anchor the 2 post lift and finish setting it up and finish running electric to the shop.

That looks great. I am kinda jealous. That is much better than my 1500 sq. ft. Industrial unit.

Post up pics. OFTEN. ! ! !
