New build garage mould help

Hi all,

Been living in my new build for just over a year now.

When I moved in I painted the garage walls with white masonry paint and fitted rubber tile matting to the floor.

I have plastic/mdf shelves which are covered with mould along with suitcases stored in the trusses. There isn't much else in there other than kids toys and bikes, nothing that will bring any wet in.

It's a pitched roof garage with side access door and an up and over door.

Not quite sure why I've got mould.

What can I do to stop the mould.

The garage will be used for dog grooming shortly which will obviously put more humidity into the air with the shower.

Will plasterboarding all the walls and roof help or does the mould need sorting prior to this?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Mold requires 3 thigs to grow....
Water, food, and oxygen.

Eliminating one of them will stop the mold and im guessing you live in a humid climate.

We are in south east PA. Our house is in the woods. This year has been nothing but rainy and humid ever day and the ground rarely dries out. We run the a/c and dehumidifier 24/7. If your humidity is over 50%, you will have problems. At the very least, make sure there is ventilation throughout the space.

Plaster board AKA sheet rock, will be a problem with mold .
It appears you could be from the the UK and if so it may be worth asking around to the trades about mold resistance substance.
some will say bleach and water , or vinegar and water will help eliminate it as will ammonia and water ( Caution: do not mix bleach and ammonia)

Sorry yes uk here, I wouldnt say it was that humid really. I think there's probably lack of air flow. I'll plan to get some air bricks added.
Thanks all

is the floor below grade? is the rubber tile holding moisture under it? are you opening the doors early in the day when the garage is cooler that the outside damp air? if so I would recommend running a dehumidifier all the time or heating the garage to above ambient.

Dont know how you roof is constructed but something like a ridge vent or one of those turbine type vents might let the hot air out the top and help get some air flowing.

Certainly welcome here from the UK. But I would think your fellow countrymen would know more than we. I picked up on the spelling straight away. I know what we say as 'mold' is a serious problem there. But copper is universal. If you can run some copper strips at the ridge, I bet that will help. IDT when copper goes through all the compound changes before going into the ground is all that toxic. But don't take that from me.

If the temperature of anything in your garage or the garage structure itself (floor, walls etc) is below the dew point of the air in the garage or the air coming in through open doors or windows or ventilation, you will get condensation on everything which will result in mold. It only takes one time of opening the garage with a cool indoor temperature and hot/humid air entering from outside to get an immediate flash of condensate moisture. Best solution is run a dehumidifier 24/7 and be aware about not opening up the garage when flash condensation can happen. Also, install an HVAC system if the budget allows.
