Hello, I just built a 26 X 28 detached garage and am in the process of finishing the inside. I have insulated the 1st floor and am finishing the second floor and then will drywall. I have the option to purchase these kitchen cabinets for $300. What do you guys think of them? I really wasn't wanting the golden oak finish when I am finished but these seem like a good deal. How hard would it be to sand them and paint them or restain them? Any other suggestions.

Not worth the effort, IMO. I could live with them for that price, and the finish on them is nice to begin with. Smoking deal. Better than what's in my kitchen!

It's certainly do-able, but a ton of work (I also hate painting). I'd buy them, install them, and THEN decide if you still couldn't stand the color. :)

In your shoes, I'd wipe them off, maybe scuff them with sandpaper, and slap a coat of enamel on. Black, dark gray, red, whatever works in your garage. I don't think you have to go nuts making sure the new paint is going to stick like powder coat -- kitchen cabinets probably get a lot more 'handling' than garage cabinets get.

If you want to get ambitious, chuck the doors and re-face them with bevel-edged plywood -- again, with dark paint. Flat faces and metal handles will look nice and 'garage-y.'

If they're a good cabinet, it's probably a decent deal. If I had to guess, somebody remeodeled a kitchen and is trying to sell the old cabinets. I'd haggle a lower price if you can.

I just bought some cabinets from IKEA.
One is 30 in. high x 48 wide w/sliding doors, the other is 30 in. high by 36 wide with hinged doors, so they will fit my wall space.

These cabinets have an optional support rail that makes these the best (but still particle board) cabinets that I have ever installed.

The support rail makes it so much easier to work with.

Looks like a pretty good setup as far as I can tell. I would be awfully tempted to pick them up if I were looking.

all those cabinets for $300 that is a good deal. Locally i search for tear outs you shoudl see what $3-400 gets you. Literally junk. Go for it and paint it later if they bother you.

Does your local school system have a warehouse ? I p/u 20' of lower cabs. and 4 4'X8' X2' art cabinets for nothing. Lowers had s.s. tops also. Some state laws reqiure them to salvage and sell before they trash items. Do a quick check, might save some money.

Go to your local pro paint dealer(I like Sherwin Williams)and ask for the prep wipe to do exactly what you describe(paint over varnish),then follow directions.

Do a quick test panel

Another approach,I haven't tried it on cabinets but works great on many many other projects.....adhesion promoter.I started using it on flex bumpers in car world. But have used it to spray weird chit where, duh, adhesion was going to be an issue."Chinamart" used to carry it,Bulldog brand.Or auto paint joint has it.BW

Thanks guys, it looks like the guy that had these for sale decided to include them in an auction this weekend, so I guess we will see. They where worth the money but I knew I wasn't going to like the oak stain and was just wondering how hard it would be to paint them. I guess I will go to the auction and see if I can get them.
