Picked up some new cabinets on the weekend. They were originally blueprint flat files, but the artist I bought them from used them for print storage/frame storage.

I've been using a similar cabinet (smaller) for my hand tools the last few years and it's worked really well, but these ones, while larger and stackable, don't have drawer slides, and are much deeper. Because the motion of pulling out the drawer is a little rough any tools inside would quickly become something of a jumble. I figure I have two options:

  1. Build some interior organization with foam or wood.
  2. Find some super-slim drawer slides.

Even if slides would fit, I think they would not be able to support enough weight - there is probably at most 1/2" room, closer to 1/4-3/8".

Any ideas? The idea behind these is to avoid the cost of tool chests. If it comes down to it, I could re-sell these relatively easily. If I keep them, I will be re-painting them.

If you're curious about measurements, they are 4' wide, 3' deep, each drawer is about 3-4" tall. I'd estimate they weigh a lot. For reference, that copper-brown square thing beside them is a half-size mini fridge. The things on top are the other two spare stands

Ideas to keep the tools in place:
1. Use foam cutouts
2. Buy/make some organizers. Then use double stick tape or pop rivet them down.
