IN the market for a new camera.Wife is convinced $100 cameras are fine. If they are all that, why are all the other $100 cameras we've had in the past junked out? Main reason is they can,'t stand up to teenagers. What are some good camera's in her $100 brain range? Something that will take good tool close-ups, yet work equally well for all other pics.Good Battery life and durability is a must. EASE of use is also important. If you know if anything like this exists please comment.THANKS

only if you like tinkering with settings to get a good picture. Canon is best for simple point & shoot.

Or you could buy one like this (used price $106) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EA0EDO/?tag=atomicindus08-20

a digital camera that can withstand a 5-foot drop, shoot under water up to 10 feet, and capture phenomenal photos in any situation

I have to agree with everyone who's said to get a Cannon PowerShot. I've had 6 of them over the years and every one was great for a pocket point and shoot.

I have a canon powershot 590 (5.9 megapix) in my tool box. it works great for taking pictures of parts and such. The thing I like the most is that it uses AA batteries. If I were out and forgot to charge it, I can stop in a store and get new ones. Also uses a standard SD card and not a memory stick. I can just pop it in the computer.

I agree with the Nikon possibilities. I got an 8 MB Nikon Coolpix L18 a year ago for about $100 and have no complaints. Its small enough to fit in my pocket that I take it shopping and take pix of cabinets and tools and stuff, including the price tags, so I can compare prices.

There are some good cameras in the $100 range. There is a website called 'Digital Photography Review' that may answer your questions. http://www.dpreview.com/

Like Wingnut65, I own a Nikon L18. I've had it for nearly two years, have shot thousands of photos, and have no complaints with it. For me, it makes a good "scouting" camera; as I shoot with a Canon 40D for more advanced photos.

I got my wife a little Pentax digital last summer....5mpix...came with a 4G mem card...takes outstanding pictures...$99 at Costco....

I'm of the firm opion that unless you want to start using different lense mounts like as on an SLR....the $100 jobs are just fine....your more likely to loose it than break it....

my pentax point and shoot finally bit the dust, so I got a fujifilm camera.. forget the exact model number, but it was 200, which is double your budget, but it's an AWESOME little camera. I have a D90 nikkon, but use my fujifilm about 2 times as much.I know mine is the 3rd or 4th gen of that particular model, so you can probably find one on ebay really cheap. great zoom, macro, battery usage, etc.
my pentax took decent pics and was about 130 bucks 3 years ago. only bad thing about the pentax, it used batteries like they were goin out of style.

the panasonic luminix is a very good camera. look at the fz35 one it is going to be replaced this summer so should start being discounted heavily. for dslr look at the pentax Kx best for price and takes any pentax lense ever made. has stabilizer control in the camera and not the lense which is a better idea. the new fugi HS10 is awesome but for 500.00 and no discounts it is selling too well .

I got a new Polaroid i1035 10 MP Digital Camera I paid $89 from woot.com.

I use it for tool close ups as well as 'point and shoot' pics.

Very happy with it.

I see newegg.com has a Polaroid T1235 12 MP Digital Camera for $125.

About 6 years ago I bought a Canon Powershot A95. About $ 350. Last year my wife
wanted a digital and we bought a Canon Powershot A590, $ 125. Picture quality is the
same in my eyes, operation about the same. Like all technology prices keep coming
down and features keep improving. Lots of good Canons.

Sony, Nikon and Canon are the established brands and I hear good thing about Panasonic too. A major problem with Canon is the fragile lens assemblies. If you bump the lens while it is extended, the camera is trashed. It doesn't take much of a bump either.
